Sarah Palin: Political Fool Or Cincinnatus In The Making?
We all know the story. Sometime in the years of the early Roman Empire Cincinnatus, a former Roman General, had quit fighting and had retired to his farm.
Rome, under inept leadership, got itself in a bind fighting a couple of the many tribes it fought through the years. They were losing to barbarians. They needed a leader, so they sent for Cincinnatus, who put down his plow and assumed the role of leader once again. As the story goes, he led Rome to victory.
So….how does this compare to Sarah Palin’s apparent political suicide of recent days? Here’s how.
Right now the Republican party has absolutely no one with the magnetism and charisma of Palin. Like her or hate her, the media can’t seem to get enough of her, either to tear her down or – in rare cases – build her up. She may have resigned as Governor of Alaska but she will not fade from the public eye. Every noise she makes, every word, will be dissected, dismantled, and pontificated upon by the media who so disdain her. They have her down – or so they think – so why stop kicking now?
If she’s half as smart as I think she is, she’ll take this opportunity to learn, to be able to speak on matters on the public stage in a more sophisticated way. The media will continue to hate her – and to cover her. No other Republican will have anywhere near her profile. And when the time comes, either in 2012 (which may be too early) or in 2016, Rome, in the guise of the GOP, will go to her and ask for her help to crush the barbarians that are taking over our country.
Then she’ll climb out of her fishing boat and take on the mantle of leadership, and the people, sick and weary of savages destroying what was once a magnificent republic, will see her with different eyes.
So, is she a political fool, or is there a bit of Cincinnatus in her? We’ll see.
