Sarah Palin And The Alaska Independence Party
News about Sarah Palin’s involvement in the Alaska Independence Party has broken, and as you might expect the anti-Republican hordes are now trying to use it to paint her as some sort of a fringe lunatic.
The question is: Is the Alaska Independence Party a fringe, kook organization? Not really. While I don’t think most Alaskans support secession from the United States, they’re actually a pretty mainstream group in the Last Frontier. In fact, while secession remains the groups #1 issue, during its over-three-decades history that goal has morphed into other goals as well. Such as making Alaska less dependent on federal funding, for instance, and supporting state’s rights.
Which is something Palin, given her opposition to federal earmarks, supports.
The AIP has become a somewhat important group for conservatives in Alaska, and it’s not surprising that an up-and-coming conservative politician in the state would seek them out. Most Americans won’t understand the secessionist movement that the AIP is founded upon (indeed, I don’t understand it either) but to say that the group stands only for that and serves no other purpose in Alaska is just plain dishonest.
Not that such dishonesty will stop the media/left (same thing) from perpetrating that view.
