Sally Fields Begins Anti-War Rant At Emmy’s, Gets Cut Off By Fox

Here’s the video:

Already the usual “censorship!” crap from the left is starting, but this isn’t about free speech.  It wasn’t Sally Fields’ show, and she didn’t have the right to turn her awards speech into a political statement.  If she wants to talk politics she’s free to get ad or air time from any media outlet that will give it to her.  Or start a blog.  Or call a press conference.  Whatever.  But just as she’s free to make any political statement she wants, media companies are free to decide not to broadcast it.  Or publish it, depending on the medium.

It’s all about choices.  You can say what you want, but I don’t have to listen or give you a platform from which to say it.

If I were running Fox I’d have let her rant on (I figure the best way to rebut celebrities looking to comment on politics is to let them make fools of themselves), but that’s just me.  The folks are Fox are, obviously, entitled to their own opinion on that.

Update: Here, apparently, is Sally backstage after the incident.

Also, as per the discussion in the comments, if Sally did indeed utter the words “god damn” or something along those lines it does change the dynamics here more than a little bit.  I, personally, am not offended by “god damn,” but Fox certainly doesn’t have to broadcast that.

What did they really censor? They cut her off at the word “god-damned”.

They censored a cuss word, not an anti-war speech. Don’t fall for “Think Progress’s” bullshit spin.

Anyone interested in the ratings for the Emmys this year check out this website. It shows the Emmys are down in viewer ship again this year. It seems people are getting tired of watching a bunch of Millionaires pat each other on the back and give themselves awards. Then instead of just saying thank you and moving on they have to tell us their opinions. Why? Do they need to feel important? Anyway, here is the website with the ratings.

The greater question is…....“Sally Fields was nominated for an Emmy???”

Mickey on September 17, 2007 at 06:15 am

There are too many different awards shows. The market is saturated. The 34% drop in one year among viewers aged 18 to 49 doesn’t surprise.

Unless you happen to be a fan of the host or an artist performing on the program it’s a total waste of time. Besides .. who are they to tell us what is best?
Pff… silly lil’ people in Hollywood!

WOOF - Fox built her a higher platform.

Fox did no such thing. FCC rules prohibit saying “God damn” on network television. You’re allowed to say “damn”, but not with the God prefix.

So many people are shitting on Fox and acting like they’re the ones to blame. The reality is that they’re looking to avoid a steep FCC fine.

FCC rules DO NOT prohibit saying “God damn”.

Good lookin’ out WOOF.

At the same time, do you hear the networks allowing that phrase? I don’t. It’s a taboo one. They don’t want to piss off the majority Christian country, and who can blame them for that one? You won’t hear it at what used to be a popular awards ceremony. At least not yet.
