SA Reader Gets A Letter In The Newspaper

Regular SA readers will get a kick out of this letter to the Fargo Forum from Dave G. Oar who comments here on SA as "Dave."

You recently published a column by columnist Cal Thomas in which he repeatedly equated the United States Democratic Party with the Taliban (“Democrat Taliban wins one”).

I fully expect that, given the level of respect you ostensibly hold of your readers, this will be the last of Thomas’ columns your newspaper will print, for rather obvious reasons. Should you fail to do so, you shall lose one loyal reader.

Those of you familiar with Dave's comments here on SA will remember that he thinks people who enjoy hamburgers are Nazis and promotes infanticide as a way to reduce the amount of suffering in the world. Yet he gets his panties all twisted because some columnist referred to the Democrats as "the Taliban." Now that's not exactly a comparison I condone (I don't like it when it is applied to Republicans either), but what a hypocrite Dave is.

He's free to compare people who eat cow meat to monsters who cooked Jews in ovens, but don't you dare offend his sensibilities with a Taliban comparison.

Comments

Too bad the Fargo Forum doesn’t know that Dave doesn’t actually believe anything he says.

I vote for freedom of the press here.  Let Dave take his fifty cents elsewhere if he can’t tolerate a diversity of opinion.  Those lefties sure love prior restraint.  You see, he could just exercise his free choice and stop buying the paper, but instead he attempts to intimidate them to doing his will by threatening them.  Bad form.

Actually he probably just likes seeing his own words on paper.

Like he matters or something.

On the other hand Dave has a point....They did “publish a column by Cal Thomas.” Of course after that his arguement went to the dogs.

You kind of can’t blame Dave for using this tactic.  I may have worked well for him on the playground when he threatened to take his ball and go home if the bullies didn’t stop giving him wedgies.

So do I. I’m allowing the Forum to make the decision on whether to continue syndicating Cal Thomas’s column--a column that I usually enjoy, particularly for his recent thoughts on the Israel-Lebanon conflict. I’m providing the Forum with more information by which to make a business decision--they’ll have to decide if Cal Thomas is worth more than my 50 cents a day. I’m pretty sure he is.

I’m still not exactly sure what my animal welfare views have to do with this, however.

As an idication of your lack of mental acumen. Or perhaps your lack of human moral structure. Take your pick, davey.

Dave, you get offended when Cal Thomas compares the Democrats to the Taliban yet you freely compare me to Nazis who exterminated millions of Jews.

If you don’t understand why that’s dumb there’s no help for you.

Yeah, Dave, take the high road: threats and intimidation.

No, this is actually just simple, free market capitalism: The Forum was producing, in my mind, a faultry product. I asked them to fix their product, or I’d choose another. Since they didn’t fix their newspaper, I started buying another.

You’ve never chosen Coke over Pepsi? Country music over Rock?

But the Fargo Forum is free to make Democrat=Taliban comparisons and “offend (my) sensibilities.” That doesn’t mean I must support them financially if they do.
