Rush Limbaugh Accuses McCain, Huckabee Of Wanting To Turn The GOP Into A Center-Left Party
And I don’t think he’s that far off the mark. Here’s a summary of his comments from Katherine Jean Lopez at The Corner:
Conservatism doesn’t have to change, he argues, and the Reagan coalition is not dead.
“What is lacking is not ideals and principles.” “What is missing is the right people to speak them.” Don’t blame conservatism for any Republican funk. The problem, Limbaugh said, “There isn’t any real leadership out there.”
He warned: If you want to see what Republican future with McCain or Huckabee would look like, he said, look to Arnold Schwarzenegger. California is a “disaster.” That’s what you get when you have “non-Republicans” in office as Republicans.
Rallying conservatives, he said: “Our principles are not dead. Our principles cannot die.” But he also warned that a nominee who isn’t one may “equal the demise of the Republican party.”
I’m with Rush on this. Far too many Republicans seem locked in “win at any cost” mode. But my question for them is: What good is beating the Democrats if we elected a Republican who is only marginally better?
If you feel that something is right, then it’s right and you shouldn’t compromise. Conservatives feel that limited government, greater individualism and lower taxes are “right.” So why, then, should conservatives compromise on those issues?
They shouldn’t. Because what’s right is right.
