Romney Romney Romney Romney Romney

I’m just not getting it. How in the hell did Mitt Romney get almost everyone in the media, or at the every least everyone in the conservative punditocracy, to care about this speech he gave today?
Go look at National Reviews “The Corner” blog. Just about every post is about Romney. And what’s more, they’re posts like “Pat Buchanan Just Said He Liked Romney’s Speech!”
It’s like reading a Romney fanboy forum or something, and a lot of other conservative media outlets are the same way. What gives? What was so extra special about this speech as opposed to the zillion other speeches the candidates have given? It’s almost like a message went out to decide that this speech was Really Important Stuff and everyone got on board.

    Mormonism is exotic?

Yes it is … they believe that God spoke to them through a bunch of golden scrolls buried somewhere in New England.

Don’t misunderstand me. I don’t think that being Mormon should disqualify anyone from being president.

That said, the idea that Mormons are just like Baptists, Lutherans, Catholics, or Presbyteriansis not accurate.

I respect the CJCLDS (Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints) but I don’t buy into it.

I think the over-hype is due to baby boomers remembering JFK and his fight to be the first elected Catholic.

    Rob,

I’d like to think that religion is still important to the majority of Americans and especially conservatives. I may be wrong but there seems to be a lot of confusion about the place of religion in American politics. Romney’s speech, for the most part was good, but 16 min. in it got really good. With all the attacks on religion and subsequently the beliefs of the majority of Americans, some of these seem to have lost their place in America and the place of religion in America’s history. The relationship between religion and government has been twisted and warped for so long that to hear it set right means an awful lot to an awful lot of Americans.

I would like to have seen Romney take it a little farther on the philosophical side regarding self-evident truths and unalienable rights, but he made what appears to be an important first step by reconnecting many Americans with their American heritage.

It was a great speech and people are sick of the 24/7 Huckabee BJ from the MSM.

Now we can see if all this press gets Romney any movement in the polls in Iowa and SC.

I didn’t hear the speech, but it’s even possible that by giving a defense of religion, or religious people, in politics, he may have inadvertently given some cover to…Baptist minister, Mike Huckabee! :)

It was really important. His religion is strange/exotic/unknown/etc to most of America and it was very important that he come out and talk about it honestly and openly. It is the most important speech he is going to give the entire primary season, other than his acceptance or concession speech, hehe.

Rob – And the constitution is pretty clear on this matter. There shall be no religious test for federal office.

    There isn’t.

What’s going on here is the public opinion test.

    Beat me to it ;)

I get annoyed at that statement made by people because no one is saying Mormons should be excluded from the office. But many, many people would like to know exactly what effects being a mormon would have on the office of President before voting for Romney and there is a huge difference.

Also, it is perfectly OK for ME as a voter to have a religious test if I choose, that is my right. It’s only the GOVERNMENT that is not allowed to have one.

Romney is about the biggest phony I have ever seen run for president.

Considering the last two Bozos the Democrats have nominated, Gore and Kerry, I’d strongly suggest a trip to your optometrist. Throw in Ralph Nader just for shits and giggles, and you’ve hit the Trifecta.

    only saw the sound bites….
I think he is a decent candidate for the right. I also think folks need to learn more about what Mormons are about. A bit more reading to see if you are comfortable with all that they believe. Most is “normal-esque” but some things are ……interesting.

    Rob,

Romney and Huckabee are clearly not as conservative as Thompson. That is a fact. But, these and the other candidates bring something to the debate and the Republican party and the country are better off for it. Romney isn’t my choice, but I greatly appreciate his contribution to the political dialogue.

    It was a great speech

In the words of Shill sound alike Gomer Pyle:

    Sur-prise! Sur-prise! Sur-prise!

He is still a northeast liberal. His religion is irrelevant. His support of socialist healthcare and amnesty for illegals is. Face it, 11 years of the same company working on his property while using illegal immigrants as labor pretty much settles the one, Romneycare bankrupting business settles the other.

well, rob, according to hugh hewitt you are now not to be trusted as an analyst…..

Romney is about the biggest phony I have ever seen run for president. If the Christian Taliban demanded monkeys flying out of Romney’s ass, Romney would find a way to make that happen also.

Romney’s speech was an excellent one. Not just for what he said about his religion, but because of what he said about people of all faiths. Instead of reassuring people about his own Mormon faith, he reasserted the proper relationship between liberty and all of our various faiths. In effect, he raised the level of the debate about faith in America.

It was a major address, and he did it extremely well.

I neither respect them nor buy in. I see those zombie-people out papering the town regularly. They, for all intensive purposes, appear to be either a very stupid or heavily medicated bunch.

I don’t dispute that. I’m just wondering why this particular speech about religion was so much more important than the other statements about religion the various candidates have made.

Mormonism is exotic? For crying out loud, there’s six million Mormons in America. It’s not that exotic.

And the constitution is pretty clear on this matter. There shall be no religious test for federal office.

I think Romney just doesn’t want to talk about his Romneycare socialized medicine scheme or his illegal immigrant gardeners any more.
