Conservatives are consoling themselves today, in the wake of the Supreme Court upholding Obamacare, with the idea that the law remaining on the books will fire up support for Republican candidates and hasten the electoral demise of Democrat candidates.

There’s a lot of truth to that, but it would be an easier pill to swallow if the guy leading the national charge on this front were Mitt Romney. The man behind the Romneycare health insurance reform, which not only included an insurance mandate at the state level but enforced it with a tax.

“For those that have higher incomes, we expect them to have health insurance,” Romney told Fox News in 2006. “And if they don’t we’re going to withhold their tax refund or put in place other penalties to assure that everybody comes in the system.”

Romney was for taxing people who don’t buy health insurance before he was against it.

Obama is a terrible leader, responsible for terrible policies, but in Romney Republicans are offering an alternative with serious credibility problems.
