RNC Has Spent $150,000 On Palin Wardrobe, Jewlery
Which, naturally, sparks a “how dare they spend that kind of money when some Americans don’t have a job!” reaction from the media:
The economy is in tatters, the military is engaged in two conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, unemployment is going to rise before it falls and millions live without health care. But the big buzz today surrounds Sarah Palin’s clothing choices. The Republican National Committee has spent $150,000 on the potential vice president’s wardrobe and jewelry, with stops at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, among other expenses, reports Politico’s Jeanne Cummings.
Meanwhile, Obama is jet-setting around the country in the posh Obama One which comes complete with custom, embroidered leather seats.
But lets get up in arms about the price of Palin’s wardrobe.
This emailer who sent Marc Ambinder a message has it right:
Obama has spent millions on TV ads, pizza, and a pile of other things, as your colleagues have reported. Why, he even bought himself his own TV channel! That is, he has spent millions on creating and presenting an image.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn’t Palin’s entire function that of changing the image of the GOP? Sure 150K is a lot for most people, but that will only buy you a 30 second slot on a second rate prime time show, and wouldn’t even buy you even 5 seconds of air time in the Super Bowl.
Yet for that 150K, what have you got? A Palin who shines, who appears on the front page of every newspaper in the country, whose image lingers on the screen in every newscast, and who dazzles foreign leaders when meeting them in person.
For the past eight years, guys like Jon Stewart have had endless riffs on the white male nature of the GOP. Like, what’s the difference between Cheney and the Cryptkeeper? The Cryptkeeper doesn’t scare children…. And what with McCain making even Cheney look flush and hale, the GOP had a serious decrepitude problem.
Seriously, what else is the GOP going to be able to capitalize on with her? The wonkish credentials? The well articulated positions?
For 150K, they bought Extreme Makeover: GOP Edition.
And besides… have you ever watched the Oscars? It’s not hard to find a blue to the bone Democratic actress with a lot more than 150K worth of gear on them.
This is a non-issue. But we’re coming down to a national election, the polls are tightening, and thus the liberals are getting desperate.
By the way, has anyone checked into how much Obama’s wardrobe has cost? Michelle Obama’s? John McCain’s? Maybe $150,000 isn’t out of the ordinary.
