RNC Convention Open Thread

If you’re watching the speech, comment here.  Here’s a live video stream:

Here are some excerpts from McCain’s speech as prepared for tonight:

On running mate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin:

“I’m very proud to have introduced our next Vice President to the country. But I can’t wait until I introduce her to Washington. And let me offer an advance warning to the old, big spending, do nothing, me first, country second Washington crowd: change is coming.”

On solving problems in Washington:

“The constant partisan rancor that stops us from solving these problems isn’t a cause, it’s a symptom. It’s what happens when people go to Washington to work for themselves and not you.

Again and again, I’ve worked with members of both parties to fix problems that need to be fixed. That’s how I will govern as President. I will reach out my hand to anyone to help me get this country moving again. I have that record and the scars to prove it. Senator Obama does not.”

On love of country:

“I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.”

At least McCain wasn’t afraid to have all his Family there.

All said and done, this race will be fun.  I wait to see the debates, and how bad Sarah kicks Joe’s tail.

What does that accomplish?  How does that help?

Recognition that he’s a lousy candidate yes

That is a little harsh.  He’s not the strongest candidate, no doubt, but not “lousy”.  He has class, honor, remarkable experiences, and a profound love of country.  He is not so much charismatic or dynamic, but he has a record of accomplishing what he sets out to do.  These may not make him a great candidate, but again, not a lousy one either.  However, these qualities will make him a good president at a time when reform and security are absolutely necessary.  He may very well prove to be the best man for the job at this point in time.

I like to think I do both.  During the speech was a time for one-liners.

Now to debate.  I was hoping that he was going to bring up two contentious and important issues that he has been dead wrong tonight.  The issues are global warming and illegal immigration.

I actually hoped that he would give enough ground so that I could hold my nose and vote against Obama.

Instead he didn’t bring up those issues.  Why even two months ago he was running a global warming ad?

Why can he bring up these issues to certain groups like La Raza or a pro immigration meeting with Schwarzenegger but can’t bring it up at the national convention?

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

I guess it’s easier to class something as hatred than debate it.

One can express hatred without attacking someone, a constant criticism and a long standing determination to not vote for him no matter what happens to this country, has to border on hatred for the man. You don’t cast your country aside for anything less than hatred for the man, IMO.

He is not our perfect candidate, I hate some of the issues he has supported, but far, far better McCain and Palin than Obama-Biden!

He was doing pretty well with the American principles, although his stuff about changing the economy to deal with “globalism” sounded a bit socialist.  Where he lost it(along with a big reduction in crowd approval) was when he went into his “cross the aisle” crap.  He framed it as being about “who gets the credit”, when it’s really who has the right ideas for America.  With the Dems lurching far left into Eurosocialism and worse, their ideas are bad for America.  If the Dems ever come back to American values, he might be right, but now it’s just pandering that will damage our country.  Too bad.  I had hoped Sarah might school him, but he’s still stuck on stupid in that area, I guess.

a constant criticism and a long standing determination to not vote for him no matter what happens to this country, has to border on hatred for the man. You don’t cast your country aside for anything less than hatred for the man, IMO.

Two things.

First of all one will never get a perfect candidate to vote for.  (Yes even Reagan).  But I will only vote for a candidate that will on balance be good for the country.

I don’t think just voting against the other guy is a good enough reason.

I will vote, but for perhaps Bob Barr (not a perfect candidate either by any means).

In fact if more people were willing to vote for someone rather than against someone the political scene would be much better.  Would McCain have his same positions if he knew that everyone against amnesty was voting for another man?  I doubt it.

Secondly and more importantly I’m not at all convinced that McCain, better man that he is by far, won’t be worse for the country that Obama.  Obama won’t do nearly as much damage as John McCain when he’s in the Whitehouse.

He’ll go back to his old ways of working with the Democrats to get the press to like him.  That will neuter the opposition and destroy the Republican party as it is.

In fact it’d be better if McCain didn’t claim to be a conservative.  He’s not.

Well whistler, if you really want to “save the party” why not vote for Obama?  I mean a vote for bar is not a vote for McCain, but a vote for Obama is a vote that may count. God knows a vote for Bar is an absolute waste given the political climate you acknowledge in your last post.  I really question your judgment.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Barack Obama’s presidential campaign said it raised $10 million Thursday following the Republican National Convention speech by rival John McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Palin’s address, heavily laced with digs at Obama, prompted an outpouring of donations from more than 130,000 donors.

“We’re up over the previous record and the number is still climbing the more Palin’s attacks are covered on cable and network news,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said.

The Republican National Committee announced earlier Thursday, at mid-afternoon, that it had raised well in excess of $1 million since Palin’s speech. Republicans expect Palin to mobilize their donors. But the Obama camp promptly used the speech as a fundraising hook, sending an overnight e-mail to supporters to contribute.

Whistler,

John is NOT a conservative.  We all agree on that.  But a vote for Barr does nothing to advance a refreshing face of conservatism in Sarah.  Kinda like cutting your nose off…

It will be up to US to make sure the BS like immigration and warming issues don’t take the US in the wrong direction.  Barr will never see enough votes to get a sniff at a bus pass to DC let alone the office.  We agree on why we don’t like the top of the ticket.  We agree on why we like the bottom of the ticket.

A vote for Barr will insure Barry wins, AND global warming and open borders votes will be difficult to overturn.

From what I reading, the political punditry this morning is giving McCain sort of a “meh” on his speech.

I think they are missing the point.  This speech was aimed point blank at the middle.  Sara rapped up the base with red meat on Wednesday.  McCain’s job was to present an image of a new America to the middle.  He did.  I liked it.

Bill Mitchell on September 5, 2008 at 04:09 am

The rock group Heart has sent a message to John McCain and Sarah “Barracuda’’ Palin: quit playing our 1977 hit ‘’Barracuda.’’

“Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.”

McCain’s acceptance speech confirmed why I believe he, and especially McCain/Palin, is not what our country needs. But, I would like to give him credit for decency:

Finally, a word to Sen. Obama and his supporters. We’ll go at it over the next two months. That’s the nature of these contests, and there are big differences between us. But you have my respect and admiration. Despite our differences, much more unites us than divides us. We are fellow Americans, an association that means more to me than any other. We’re dedicated to the proposition that all people are created equal and endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights. No country ever had a greater cause than that. And I wouldn’t be an American worthy of the name if I didn’t honor Sen. Obama and his supporters for their achievement.

If only the media (left and right leaning) and campaign managers on both sides could draw inspiration from this nicely put premise about America and being American.
