Riflemen First

I promised myself that I wasn't going to blog during my time away from the blog, but yesterday I heard something I had to share.

We're in Kansas City right now, which is where my cousin is stationed with the Marines. Last night my girl and I took him and his girlfriend out for Easter supper. During the course of the meal our conversation turned to the war in Iraq. Chris (my cousin) is assigned to some sort of information technology deployment here.

Basically, they fix computers for the military and aren't very likely to be deployed to the war zones in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The other day, however, Chris said that one of his superiors called a meeting and asked for volunteers to be deployed to Iraq.

According to my cousin, every single soldier in the room raised his/her hand to volunteer.

Apparently only the female volunteers were picked (they are apparently in need of females in Iraq to help with the arrest and detainment of female terror suspect), but the fact that everyone there (my cousin included) volunteered is a testament to the fortitude of our Marines. Not to mention the different picture it presents as to the morale of our troops from the one commonly put forth by Democrats and the media.

Chris also told me that everyone he knows who has signed up for duty since 9/11 has done so out of support for our mission in Iraq/Afghanistan. Which makes sense. With the war on right now, signing up for active duty military service means that it is very likely you will be seeing combat, yet as I've posted before active duty recruitment is exceeding goals.

Our troops believe in the mission in Iraq. The 63,000,000 or so Americans who voted for President Bush in 2004 believe in the mission in Iraq. Unfortunately, the Democrats and the media do not, and their negativity seems to speak louder than the optimism displayed by our troops and the majority of American voters.

Too bad the military is only able to enlist n’er-do-wells and those too uneducated and unskilled to get real jobs, huh?  Only the brain-dead, jingoistic, and war-mongering among us would be foolish enough to ‘volunteer’ for the war zone.  If only they were Democrats and knew better… *sigh*

/sarcasm

Bless ‘em all--each and every one.

Now I just laugh at your claims of non-partisanship.  What a waste of time.

Lol @ Mule. I’m glad you added that "sarcasm" note at the end. I was about to blow a major gasket until I saw that smile

The US Marines have consistently performed at a level "above and beyond" this country’s expectations for over 230 years.  It would have been surprising if anyone in that room had NOT volunteered.

Please pass on to your cousin Chris my personal thanks for his service, and a hearty Semper Fi

First of all, I never claimed to be non-partisan, bob--although I am.  Moreso, though, I’m a realist.

FYI, there are several issues on which I don’t think Bush (or anyone else in the current administration) can find his ass with a flashlight in either hand.  That said, the left’s tired ol’ meme about how they support the troops, but not the war, and how we’re sacrificing our ‘kids’, and how ain’t it a shame that rich people’s chil’ren ain’t paying the price, et al...has been a crock of horseshit from the very beginning.

PS--Thanks for the "What a waste of time," comment.  It tells me I’m on solid ground.

 Regards…

I doubt that.

Wasn’t aimed at you, LTM.  But draw inspiration from it if it helps.

Dave, you beat me to it.  To assert that everyone that voted for President Bush backs the war is absurd and naive.

It is also offensive to assume that those that question the war can’t appreciate what it takes to be soldier.

This is the very point I have made several times here and repeatedly elsewhere. This weekend is a perfect example, our annual openning day of trout season Fish Camp. Usually 20 to 30 people over 3 or 4 days, cooking wild game and fish and everything else over open fires and grills, fishing, drinking, telling lies about fishing and hunting. Rain, shine, or snow. This year it became an extended sendoff party for 123 troops aheading across the water, Army, Marines, Air Force, and Navy. All of them have served one or more tours in Afghanistan or Iraq. 51 are triple ticketers, this being their 4th combat deployments. And all volunteers, no stop loss, no IRR call ups. And not all are going to Iraq, many are deploying to Indonesia, Philipines, and central Africa. The GWoT is not a single country issue, and we are about take the fight to them, again. Rob, you tell that young Marine to carry on. His job is just as important as any mudmarine, Company Commander, or Sniper/Recon Jarhead in the Corps. Everything else is just noise.

63,000,000 people voted for President Bush in an election where Iraq was issue #1.  You guys want to pretend it means something else?  Go ahead, but the President promised to finish this war during his campaign and the majority of Americans voted for him.

If that doesn’t tell you something I wonder who the truly naive person where is.

Now I just laugh at your claims of non-partisanship.  What a waste of time.

Since this was directed at me, where have I claimed to be non-partisan?  I have always indicated that I have my biases and have only claimed non-partisanship in as much as I allow comments from all political points of view in response to my opinions and the opinions of others posted here.

And, by the way, what is so partisan about pointing out the observations I made in the post?  Is indicating that our troops aren’t melancholy over the war in Iraq now a partisan move?  Am I a lock-step right-winger because I won’t agree with you that things are going to hell in Iraq?

Give me a break.  I call things as I see them.  If you disagree, fine, but you’ll have to come up with something better than your typically bitter pouting to convince me that you’re right.

Can you at least bring it down to 62,999,998? I know for a fact that my y uncle voted for Bush because he "ain’t gonna let those faggots marry," and my ex-girlfriend voted for him because he was pro-life.

I also disagree with your assessment that the Iraq War was issue #1. According to exit polls, "Moral Values" was the most important issue for the most people--22%, compared to 15% for Iraq.

It’s not that we disagree on policy, it’s that you distort and mislead.  That’s what’s laughable.

According to exit polls

Dave, According to Exit Polls, Kerry won.   But keep putting your faith in the polls.  smile

Seth Yantiss on April 18, 2006 at 05:35 am

Seth: So because the polls were off by a couple of percentage points, we can safely disavow all their results? If you have some proof that Iraq was actually the most important issue for voters in the 2004 election, I’d be grateful if you could post it.  If not.... we may as well stick to the most accurate statistics on the subject.

My word, no, Dave.  I disavow polls because so many have a liberal slant.  Just as Don, MI, and the rest won’t denounce the notion of book banning, the liberal establishment will make up poll results to correspond with their premise.  They frame the questions in such a way, or flat out make up numbers...   Kerry was supposed to win in a LANDSLIDE by exit polling data...  Not by just a few % points.  Did you forget?

I don’t know what the "Major Issue" was for most people during the last election.  For me, it was making sure a traitor didn’t become president.  But I don’t recall having that option on my exit poll...  oh, wait...  I didn’t get an exit poll...  Perhaps that’s because I live in a Republican district...
