Ridge Resigns

WASHINGTON -- Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge is resigning, FOX News confirmed Tuesday. He is expected to announce his decision at a 2:45 p.m. EST press conference.

"We thank him for his service, it has been a mammoth undertaking,"said Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., upon learning from FOX News of Ridge's decision.

Ridge got a lot of criticism from all over the political spectrum for the way he spent Homeland Defense money, the color code terror warning system and the much-maligned "duct tape" advice given to citizens as a way to protect themselves from chemical attacks.

But overall I think you have to say that Ridge did a good job. Its not easy to take a country our size that was basically asleep on the issue of terrorist attacks and turn it into an alert one. Ridge has gotten that ball rolling, not perfectly mind you, but effectively.

Lets hope his successor can improve on Ridge's start.

Update:

By the way, I'm supporting Joe Lieberman to replace Ridge. And those of you looking for Rudy Giuliani to replace Ridge need to go read Michelle Malkin.

...overall I think you have to say that Ridge did a good job.

On what possible basis can you make a statement like that?

I’m going to have to agree with Don Myers.  I lived in Pennsylvania while Ridge was governor and I have to say he wasn’t very good at that job either.  He has some good ideas, but his execution is crap.

I guess I’m basing my statement on the fact that we haven’t had a major, or even a minor, terrorist attack in this country since 9/11.  Its hard to argue with that.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.
