Rick Berg Raises Nearly 44% More From North Dakotans Than Heidi Heitkamp

A couple of weeks ago the Heitkamp campaign, without releasing any of the actual details, announced that they had raised more from North Dakotans than any other previous Democrat campaign. “U.S. Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp has reached a financial milestone, having raised $1 million from North Dakota donors from November 1, 2011 to September 25, 2012,” read the press release. “No other statewide Democratic candidate has ever raised that much money in state.”
The exact figure given by the campaign was $1,042,215.18.
I noted at the time that Rick Berg had raised nearly that same amount in North Dakota not even counting the third quarter and that he was almost certainly enjoying a wide lead over Heitkamp in financial support from North Dakotans.
Last night the Berg campaign released their in-state fundraising figure for the cycle to me: $1.5 million.
This means, despite Heitkamp’s “record” fundraising in North Dakota, Berg has raised nearly 44% more than her in the state.
North Dakotans are notoriously tight-fisted when it comes to politics, so most candidates for federal office end up getting most of their money from out of state. But in a race where there are few data points to tell us who is in the lead, with the polls few and far between, this metric may just indicate that Berg has momentum among North Dakotans that Heitkamp doesn’t.
