Rick Berg Needs To Get Better At Answering The Tough Questions
Here’s video of Rep. Rick Berg fielding questions from a clearly hostile Fargo Forum editorial board about why he won’t debate fellow Republican Duane Sand who is challenging Berg in a primary for the party’s Senate nomination.
I’ve made it clear in the past that I have a pretty low opinion of Duane Sand as a candidate, and Forum opinion editor Jack Zaleski (who is doing the questioning) is a self-important prig who isn’t fit to be writing kitty toy reviews for Cat Fancy (this would be the same Zaleski who gets his “facts” about the Bakken oil boom from random email forwardS), but there’s no denying that Berg bombs in his answers to these questions.
Berg is asked, repeatedly, why he won’t debate Sand. Berg keeps saying over and over again that his focus is on the general election. Which…isn’t really an answer.
Why wouldn’t Berg give an answer? Why not come out and say that Sand isn’t really a serious candidate? Why not point out that Sand’s fundraising efforts are so anemic that they’re actually losing his campaign money?
Why not say that Sand is an opportunist who has brought zero policy substance to this race and relies on media gimmicks to keep his name in the headlines? Why not say that you’re focusing on your real challenger, Democrat Heidi Heitkamp, because anyone who has been paying attention knows that Sand is only looking for a forum for more baseless accusations?
I can understand why Berg doesn’t want to elevate Sand by acknowledging him, but Berg also has to realize that the Democrat-friendly North Dakota media sees Sand as a golden opportunity to sow dissent among Republicans, and so the choice on whether or not to acknowledge him isn’t his to make.Tags: duane sand, election 2012, jack zaleski, North Dakota News, Rick Berg
