Republicans Possibly Giving Up Convention Time For Hurricane Coverage, Dems Rooting For Gustav
Republicans are thinking about rejiggering their convention to include a pre-emptive strike of aid for the gulf coast region in the face of Hurricane Gustav.
John McCain and the GOP are considering scrapping political speeches and turning their St. Paul/Minneapolis convention into a “service” program to help victims of Storm Gustav, The Post has learned.
Sources told The Post that McCain himself might visit the Gulf Coast during the week of the Republican National Convention, which begins tomorrow. McCain is not scheduled to make his nomination speech until Thursday.
The contingency plan – a worst case scenario if the storm devastates coastal areas – would turn Republicans into Red Cross-type volunteers who would help collect donations, food and goods to help storm victims.
Not a bad plan, though Republicans are sort of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” with this. If they focus a lot of attention on the hurricane they’ll be accused by the left and the media (same thing, really) of exploiting a natural disaster for political gain. If they don’t do anything they’ll be accused of being callous and uncaring.
So they may as well go for it. Better to be called exploitative than callous.
But speaking of exploiting a natural disaster for political gain, Michael Moore is busy thanking God for this hurricane:
Former DNC Chairman Don Fowler is thankful for Hurricane Gustav too:
I wonder how many lives of citizens in the gulf coast region the Democrats are willing to write off as acceptable losses for the sake of winning the White House?
