Republicans Have Nothing To Win In Fighting Sotomayor Appointment

With Obama’s announcement today it seems as though Republicans are gearing up for a big fight against Sotomayor’s appointment.  What I’m wondering is…why?

Granted, the problems with Sotomayor should be pointed out.  Obama’s flawed judgment in picking her should be criticized.  The media’s double standards in covering the appointment process should be exposed.  But ultimately, Obama’s the President and Sotomayor is his pick.  And unless something serious in her background comes out (like, uh, maybe unpaid taxes) bring her nomination to an up or down vote.

And, really, what’s to be won in opposing Sotomayor?  Again, barring any unforeseen scandals, she’s going to be appointed.  And her addition to the Supreme Court won’t change much.  She’s a liberal replacing a liberal.

Republicans have bigger fish to fry right now.  While the battle over Sotomayor’s appointment would be dominating the news (if it happened), Obama would continue to pursue things like nationalized health care and cap and trade.  Policies that portend a lot worse things for America than Sotomayor’s appointment.

As I write this, news is breaking that North Korea may have just test-fired another missile.

I say appoint Sotomayor as quickly as possible and keep the heat on Obama in other areas.
