Republicans Demand That Burris Resign From Senate

When Burris was fighting hypocritical Democrats who, while denying him his seat in the Senate, were trying to seat not-yet-elected Al Franken I was supportive of Burris being seated. At the time there was no indication that he’d done anything wrong. He was simply Governor Blagojevich’s pick for the Senate, made in a perfectly legal fashion.
But now it’s come to light that Burris was solicited by Blago for a contribution in exchange for making the appointment, and that Burris didn’t report this to federal authorities. And now I agree with Rep. Jim Durkin that Burris should resign after this revelation.

An Illinois Republican leader says the state’s freshman U.S. senator should resign over contradictory statements regarding Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s impeachment.
State Rep. Jim Durkin told reporters Sunday that Democrat Roland Burris should resign over an affidavit contradicting statements he made earlier to a House committee.
Durkin also wants Burris investigated for possible perjury.
Gov. Pat Quinn also says Burris owes a full explanation. Burris plans a news conference later Sunday.
An affidavit released Saturday indicates Blagojevich’s brother asked Burris to host a fundraiser for the governor before Burris was appointed to the vacancy left by Barack Obama. That reflects a major omission from January testimony.

Failure to report a crime is a crime in and of itself. Burris should be held accountable for this.
But Democrats will balk at such accountability. Partly because it would put more scrutiny on an already nasty Democrat scandal, but mostly because it wouldn’t contrast well with the Obama administration not being held accountable of failing to report Blago’s solicitation of money in return for a favorable-to-Obama appointment.
We know that Obama rebuffed Blago’s attempts to get some quid pro quo, but by denying Blago the Obama people admit that they knew Blago was trying to sell the Senate seat. There has been nothing released to date to indicate that Obama and/or his people contacted federal authorities to report Blago’s illegal and unethical behavior, so is the Obama administration not just as guilty as Burris in essnetially being complicit in Blago’s crimes?
Of course, but don’t expect Obama (who campaigned on transparency and accountability, by the way) to take some responsibility. Or even be taken to ask by the fawning press corps that follows him about.

if they really want to push it….. thought the problem was the question he was asked was not specific enough. (ie. HE COULD have told them rather than HE SHOULD have told them. hes guilty of only answering what they asked of him and therefore he didnt break any laws.)

basically, is it his fault the questions sucked? not one bit.

    Greetings:

It would be interesting to see US Attorney General Eric Holder, a withholder of information of some repute, go after Senator Burris.

Typical. People who have no moral compasses. Anything they can lie, cheat or steal without being caught is fair game! Not in my book nor the Boy Scout's Law and Oath.

Au contraire, great hope, I had it pegged from day one as I was certain that with a dem president and a dem congress there was no one to oppose the dem agenda. Obviously I didn't know the exact measures they would enact but I knew that whatever they did it would not be good for our country.

What you may have forgotten is that Bush used his veto power to reign in the dems over the past 2 years. With Bush gone and Obama as president there was nothing that could stop or delay the dem socialist juggernaut.

This is just a dry run for the republicans. They want to see how effective their smear machine is since they dusted it off. It's been in a closet since the Clinton years.

Since they ran out of ideas sometime around 1999, all they have is creating scandals and shrieking about them like loser bitches.

The left will just rename the truth as "smears" and go on ignoring the blatant double standards and hypocrisy.

ANYTHING Illinois must be scrutinized to the smallest detail. There was no indepth vetting of Burress because he had the convenient distraction of the larger corruption. The political state of Illinois is in TOTO, and to forget that fact is to let the weasels through. Lesser criminals become bigger criminals once handed any amount of power.

So the Hypocrats, once refusing to seat Burress, are now refusing to put him back in the sewer?

  • Hannitized

Is it a crime to host a fundraiser? I had no idea.

Unless this fundraiser was corrupt and Burris knew it was corrupt. I don't see any wrongdoing here that would be cause for resignation.

Can someone provide a reasonable argument here to counter standard common sense?

    Thank you.

  • Hannitized

For a better understanding of the challenges Burris is facing, you can follow this link.

It gives the real reason Burris is in hot water.

Hint: Not because he hosted a fundraiser.

Nonsense! Burris lied by omission. It really is that simple.

And as an attorney and former Illinois State Attorney General, he damn well knew what he was doing, despite the obfuscatory horseshit about not being specifically asked during his confirmation hearing.
