Republican Bob McDonnell Wins Big In Virginia Governor Race

Obama campaigned for McDonnell’s competitor Creigh Deeds pretty heavily, and Democrats won big in November in 2006 and 2008, but McDonnell dominated anyway.

WASHINGTON – Republicans wrested political control of Virginia from the Democrats on Tuesday as independent voters swung behind the GOP, a troubling sign for President Barack Obama and his party heading into an important midterm election year. …
Republican Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell’s victory in Virginia over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds was a triumph for a GOP looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008. It also was a setback for the White House in a swing state that was a crucial part of Obama’s electoral landslide just a year ago. The president had personally campaigned for Deeds.

Republicans should remember, though, that if this race was won based on dissatisfaction with Democrats (and it probably was) it doesn’t translate necessarily into support for them.
Voters fed up with Republicans is how Democrats won elections in 2006 and 2008, but now it’s backfiring on them. Because they were the default choice. They won the elections as the only available alternative not because they earned the victories.
With McDonnell’s win, and possible wins in New Jersey and New York to happen later tonight, Republicans will have a lot to be excited about. But they won’t be out of the woods just yet.

With over 10% of the vote in (compared to 2005) the Republican in NJ has a
nice lead. It all depends what areas’ votes are in of course.

Conservatism comes naturally to the elderly. They are forced to economize whenever they can, and experience has taught them to recognize and no truck with scoundrels. Of course if you send an elderly person to Congress all bets are off.

Conservatism isn’t “extreme”; it’s the moderate position between totalitarianism and anarchy.

From the totalitarian point of view, though, the individual independence of conservatism appears “extreme”, since it clashes with their desire for “the dictatorship of the proletariat”.

I think this is good for the republicans, I think Glenn Beck is right, the left doesn’t really know what coming. I can see a lot of incumbents getting voted out of office. I could see Harry Reid getting sent his walking papers in the next election. People don’t want what the dems are cooking.

By extreme conservatism you mean people that want to slow down the growth of
government and promote freedom. I can see why you’re scared.

I have no doubt that the state run media will blame this defeat on everyone except Obama. The people are speaking – and the people that were elected to represent us need to listen. The tea-parties are not astro-turf. The American Public was fooled last November but we are not fools.
Hey Barack – Can you hear us yet. Have no fear – you may need earplugs soon.

We can vote Obama out next year!

    You’re not fooling anyone, idiot.

Rob you have the correct cautionary comments. It will depend on which party can entice the independants. Independants do not like extremism , left or right, and I believe vote for their pocket book.
