Rep. Earl Pomeroy Coordinaets With AARP For A CYA Maneuver On Health Care Vote
Earlier today I received a tip from a reader that Rep. Earl Pomeroy had a “clandestine” meeting at AARP this morning at 9:30am. “Clanedstine” because the media was notified very, very late about the event.
Clearly, Pomeroy is enlisting the group’s help in spinning his flip-flop and betrayal of North Dakotans on health care and doesn’t want a lot of media questions about his vote or his alliance with AARP. Pomeroy knows he’s in trouble on the vote, and that it has made him extremely politically vulnerable in advance of what’s shaping up to be a tough campaign season, and so he knows all the help he can get.
And, according to the Associated Press, the AARP is leaping to Pomeroy’s defense:
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota health care executives and the state chapter of the AARP are defending Rep. Earl Pomeroy’s support of a House health care bill.
A conservative seniors’ group says the bill means $400 billion in Medicare spending reductions. The 60 Plus Association has bought television ad time to criticize Pomeroy’s vote for the measure.
Pomeroy said the health bill will mean smaller spending increases for Medicare but won’t affect health care for seniors or restrict their ability to choose their doctors.
For what it’s worth, at this point the AARP may as well be a group like MoveOn.org. Except that they sell insurance to.
AARP isn’t advocating for the best interests of seniors. The AARP is advocating for what’s best for…the AARP.
