Reno Woman Shifting The Blame

Yet another person is refusing to take responsibility for events in their own lives.

From Denver Channel 7 News:

A Reno woman has sued Coors Brewing Co. over her son's death in a traffic accident, claiming the company promotes underage drinking.

In her lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washoe County District Court, Jodie Pisco contends Coors has failed in its duty to protect the country's youth from drinking. The suit seeks unspecified damages.

Pisco's 19-year-old son, Ryan, was killed in March 2002 after he drank Coors at a party in Reno and drove his girlfriend's car into a light pole at 90 mph.

"They should be well aware that people under 21 are drinking Coors," said Ken McKenna, Jodie Pisco's lawyer. "They should be liable for the damage caused by underage drinking."

So let me get this straight. Coors is responsible for Ryan Pisco drinking an excessive amount of beer. Coors is responsible for Mr. Pisco making the subsequent decision to drive after having consumed so much beer. And finally, Coors is responsible for Mr. Pisco deciding to drive his car at such an excessive rate of speed.

So what exactly is Ryan Pisco responsible for? We shouldn't hold him responsible for the amount he drank or his decision to get behind the wheel? How about a little responsibility?

Does Jodie Pisco really want us to believe that her son was unaware of the dangers of drinking and driving (as well as the dangers of driving 90mph on public roads) because Coors didn't properly warn him?

If you ask me, liquor stores should make customers sign a statement worded something like this before leaving with their purchases:

I, John Doe Liquor Store Customer, understand that consuming the alcohol I purchased on this date will cause me to become intoxicated. I further understand that such a state of intoxication will hinder my ability to drive an automobile or make decisions using sound judgment. My actions while under the influence of the alcohol I have purchased are my own responsibility.

I certainly wouldn't have a problem signing this small statement at the time of my alcohol purchase.

If Ryan Pisco had signed a statement like this maybe his mom could believe that his death was the result of his own stupidity.

Or maybe she could ask herself why she raised such a stupid kid.

Maybe she should sue the car maker—why would any car be able to go 90 mph????

Maybe the light-pole manufacturer, for not making them safe to impact at such speeds—or for putting them so close to the road!

Or maybe she could sue MADD for not getting out the message that drinking and driving kills?

Or maybe, just maybe, she should sue the ambulance-chasing lawyer who talked her into this crap…
