The Democrat National Convention is kicking off this week.  Liberals from around the country are flocking to Charlotte to go about their party’s business and rally behind President Barack Obama as he seeks another four-year term.

But you know who won’t be there?  Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp who, according to a recent article in The Economist, “styles herself ‘an independent voice’ rather than a Democrat.” Gulleson, too, has tried to distance herself from her party saying in her first television ad, “I’m an independent.”

If you’re having a hard time buying that it’s hard to blame you.  In 2008 Heitkamp, specifically, was an enthusiastic attendee at the Democrat National Convention where she was an enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama.  ”I think Barack Obama is going to be amazing. And I think that we are on our way to a better United States in the next eight years,” she said at the time.  “I’m sure that Barack Obama is going to be amazing. So that’s what I’m looking forward to. And seeing all my pals. I have pals here.”

It’s too bad Heitkamp and Gulleson thinks their “pals” are too extreme to hang out with during an election year.
