Reader Blogs Chock Full Of Good Stuff

Skewed polls, dude bombs, plots against the White House, famous speeches, border fences, Scarlett Johanson, disease epidemics and the “art” of blaming Bush are all covered on the reader blogs today.

If you’d like to keep track of all reader blog posts, here’s the feed.

If you want to follow along to a specific reader blog author, individual feeds are available here.

If you’d like your own reader blog, just register by clicking the link on the header and then log in, go to the reader blogs and click “request a blog” at the top of the right sidebar.  Once you’re approved you’ll be able to post as much as you want when you want.

I have the reader blogs as part of my RSS feed for my Google homepage.  I keep in touch.

BUT

I’m afraid that we have lost something.  I note the readership as reflected in the comment intensity may be far less than being part of the “Big Boys” blog.

That may be without repair.  I haven’t yet sent anything in.  Haven’t known what to.  Will at some point.

But not all change is improvement, but there is no improvement without change.

This may be a work in process hoping to go big time.

We’ll see.

The problem with having everyone post on the main page is that as we get more and more people submitting posts the front page becomes...cluttered.  The reader blogs allow for the posts to be broken down a bit by author.  If there’s someone a reader wants to follow, they can now.  Submitters have their own mini-blogs.

And it will probably take a while for the reader blogs to catch on.  Already there’s about 100 subscribers to the reader blogs feed, and that’s not bad.  More than a lot of other primary blogs.

I think you should give it a chance, Gene.  The reader blogs don’t get as much attention as the front page does now, but if enough people post to the reader blogs it will.

You did one post, and it got 14 comments.  Not bad…

Just give it a chance.

Hell, Gene, I have it in my Bloglines feed, I check them first in the morning, then BBC, then EurekAlert! Planetary Sciences, then BetaNews. Then I hit AccuWeather and trawl my other news sources. Hey, Rob, did I ever thank you for turning me on to Bloglines? My feeds list is getting huge!

2H9, I think you did, but I’m glad you’re liking it.  There isn’t a more efficient way to cover a lot of blogs in a short amount of time.

To be honest with you, if a site doesn’t have an RSS feed I pretty much don’t read it.

I am going to have to start RSSing blogs. Too many of them don’t have email notification for comments anymore. And Rob, not sure, but it appears that one of the posts in reader blogs is from a website, not a person. The one on Chickungunya creating an epidemic. I clicked the author name to see the profile and it took me to a webpage called OneIndia, which appears to be an open source entertainment/news/livestyles page. Not sure what the deal is with that. Though the article on mosguito borne disease is good, I was wondering why it showed up here.

It’s from a reader.  She emailed me for help in setting up her blog.

Cool! Get that international thing going on. Since we lost our Loatian connection and Paulie is back in the World we have only had Bullwinkle chiming in from the Southern Riviera. Canada don’t count.

I think we “regulars” need to make a point of visiting the reader side as much as the “Rob” side.  Also try to join in the conversation.

That more than anything will get “our” side rolling.

You see when your Drivers Licence insists you are over 60 years old and you live in denial it takes a jolt like this to help remind oneself.

I had forgotten.

yikes.

That and it will take a while for Google and the other web/blog search engines to catch onto the reader blogs, but once that happens you’ll be getting a lot of eyeballs on your posts from people searching the web for the sort of stuff you guys are posting about.

It’ll come along, you just have to be patient.

I think it’s a GREAT way for me to have my “own” blog.

I’ve toyed with the idea of doing my own blog (I even purchased the name).

However I thought better of it because I couldn’t devote the time to do it right.

IMO you need a lot of action to build blog readership.  I’ve guest blogged for Rob and to post at his regular frequency demands too much time for me to do it regularily.

So this way I get my own blog, my posts are seen on a fast moving page (the reader blogs).  Plus the comments I generate show up on the front page of a very good and well read blog.

It seems well worth my time to build that reader blogs up.  I sure as heck would not be able to get this readership if I started m own blog.

This is a big reason why I started the reader blogs.  There are a lot of good writers in SA’s audience, but most of them (I don’t think) have the time to devote to running an entire blog.  So this way when they have something they want to post they can, and it will be read by a decent-sized audience, and the author doesn’t have to worry about blog maintenance or spam or posting enough to keep the audience coming back.  I do that.
