Rather’s Lawyers: Nobody Ever Proved Memos Were Fake
Well, from a legal standpoint, I guess he’s technically correct. I mean, nobody has ever challenged the veracity of the memos in court so the matter has never been settled in a legal setting. But implying that the memos are real in the process of suing a big corporation like CBS for tens of millions of dollars in a high-profile lawsuit is just begging for that to happen.
Is Rather really so stupid as to invite that outcome? Apparently he is.
Gold, Rather’s lawyer, maintained that “nobody’s proved the documents were forgeries. The way we look at it, it’s more than likely the documents are authentic.”
What’s worth noting here is that even if the memo’s are real (they’re not, but bear with me) there’s a point to be made about Rather not knowing whether or not they were real either. Even Rather’s lawyer isn’t going 100% on record here about the memo real, so how can Rather say he knew for 100% certainty that they were real back in 2004? And if he didn’t know for certain that they were real what business did he have running a story about them as if they were?
That’s still shoddy journalism, and grounds for Rather’s dismissal.
