Random Thoughts from the 50th State

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Every now and then, Thomas Sowell does a column of random thoughts. The similarity ends there! Heh.

*Been spending the last couple days in the 50th (not 57th) state. This morning’s Honolulu Advertiser had pictures of Obama’s White House “luau”. Some of the bloom must be off Obama’s hibiscus, since a bunch of locals on the radio here were taking exception to whether Obama’s choice of menu items were suitable for a genuine luau. Amidst disagreement on nearly every item on the menu, the Pièce de résistance was the dessert choice: strawberry tiramisu. Best line?

Oh, it was an Italian luau!

Heh.

*Another cultural indicator was found at the ubiquitous ABC Stores. There on the bargain table with the ugliest and oddest color t-shirts, were the “I (heart) Obama”, and “Obama is my homeboy” t-shirts.  The bloom is off the hibiscus!

*On the isle of Maui (as opposed to the Isle of Lucy) one of the scenic vistas is marred with a row of windmills along the top of a mountain ridgeline, ruining a view unmarred for centuries.
Many municipalities forbid individuals from building houses on top of ridgelines (because the spoil the sight lines!), but here, a bunch of structures with all the panache of a row of telephone polls can be seen for miles! One small nuke plant, nestled in one of the valleys around there, and they could have more power than those windmills would provide in their lifetime!
