Pulitzer-Winning Cartoonist Disinvited From School Event Because Of Teacher Union Criticism

Apparently San Diego Union Tribune editorial cartoonist Steve Breen has been uninvited from a speaking gig at a school over this editorial cartoon criticizing teachers unions.

I don’t see anything overtly inflammatory in that. It’s critical of teachers unions, sure, but since when was that a crime?
This reminds me of the North Dakota teachers union banning the teacher of the year from a banquet for award-winning teachers because she’s not a union member.
Given that union enrollment around the country is on the decline, and that the big three automakers are currently in Washington DC begging for taxpayer dollars to bail them out of the hole the labor unions have dug them into, you’d think that that Big Labor would want to avoid this level of arrogance.

In case you're wondering, those are my union dues at work.

I think the pirate flags are very appropriate. The NEA/CTA is nothing but a high-pressure political party unto itself, run by castrati men and women who wear Lane Bryant stretch pants.

If you ever dare to criticize the union in front of them they treat you like excrement and try to get the principal to get rid of you.

Public sector unions run the state of California. They own the legislature and the governator is terrified of them.

That's why taxes are going up even though the state already takes about 50% more per capita than New York.

In California we have government or, by and for government workers.

So let me get this straight…. the very people who are supposed to be at the forefront of thought; the forefront of diversity and opinions, the ones who encourage different ideas are the ones that seek to silence one who holds a dissenting view. Just another example of how "illiberal" the Liberal establishment is.

I am sick and tired of a bunch of union goons destroying our economy. Down with these thugs!

  • john

These people (the teachers unions) are more than self-serving arrogant incompetents, that are destroying not just our economy, but our culture and our country as well by poisoning generations of our children with their anti-American teachings. They must be outlawed not only for the good of our nation, but for the good of our children as well.

  • John

No wonder they are offended. The truth hurts!

The education of today's youth – tomorrow's leaders – has been on a steady decline for some time now. I contribute this decline to teacher unions. How does one proclaim to unionize the education system? We, as a nation, do not have equal standards from state to state, pay is not comparable to the task, educators teach not to educate but to influence a higher passing of mandated tests.

Each school has criteria for graduation, why not have this, at least, standardized. Not with teacher's unions, they will do all that they can to stifle progress in the name of job protection.

We need an address so we can send them some eye patches.

I taught in public school for a short while, in a non-unionized system, and even there, it's amazing how entrenched the union mentality is. Almost every feature of a union contract is present in their contract. What is it about education as an industry that fosters this?

And, yes, if you notice that I write in complete, properly-structured sentences, and can even spell, it helps explain why my tenure (as a science teacher) was so short: they don't like to be made to look bad. I never worked with such an ill-educated and illiterate bunch as when I was a teacher.

Maybe their lack of (actual) education is what attracts them so to unions. They may have a fair degree of training, but little education, even if they scammed a PhD in education (or Ed.D) along the way.

Thankfully they don't call it a Ph.D.-because it's not! I don't want my actual degree cheapened by having to compete with people bearing fake degree from a school of ed!

I work in an academic library in the state capitol of Alabama.
After dealing with the requests of the students that are education majors (don't show me how to find it, just show me where it is), it is very scary to think that if they manage to graduate, they will be entrusted with the education of our children.

The teachers that return for "certification requirements" in the summer are soooo lazy.
Their number one FAQ is "Don't you have an example that I can copy?"

We lose more articles (cut or torn from journals) from the education journals than all others combined. The number one journal for lost articles (stolen, torn out, or cut away) is the Phi Delta Kappan.

AIN'T IT ABOUT TIME THAT 'PUBLIC EMPLOYEE UNIONS' (LOBBIES)
WERE MADE VOTER – OPTIONAL, AS THERE ARE:

    1. NO PROFITS TO DISTRIBUTE TO 'DESERVING WORKERS' – AS
    GOVERNMENT CREATES NO WEALTH…
    2. TEMPTATIONS FOR THE EMPLOYEE TO BECOME A 'UNION-
    CORRUPTED PLUNDER-PARTNER'
    3. POLITICIZED UNIONS AMOUNTING TO A SUPERFLOUS THIRD
PARTY THREAT TO THE PROTECTION OF THE RIGHTS OF THEIR
    REAL BOSSES, THE VOTERS…
    4. PUBLIC EMPLOYEES WHO NEED TO BE REMINDED DAILY THAT THEY
ARE NOT 'OWED A JOB', OR A CAREER…

    BEST WISHES,
    'DBD'

The teachers unions (even here in Texas) have repeatedly stated that competition in schools is a bad thing. I would like to know why. They don't like competition ANYWHERE.
Not in the schools, not in gym class, and certainly not on the playground.

Whene the governement takes over something, the first two things you lose are profit and competition. These are the two things which force a company to do its best. If you have to shaow a profit, you MUST offer a quality product.
Apparently, the unions are incapable of providing that quality. Therefore, thet must restrict competition.

Labor Unions have become the embodiment of what they were created to fight!! They are monopolies and therefore should be subject to Antitrust legislation!!

  • Daniel

Of course this cartoon is appropriate. Most unions are reminiscent of the times of slavery. The union bosses are nothing more than the slave masters using the slaves to maintain control over private business.

Here in Nebraska, our university at Lincoln had invited William (Bombing Bill) Ayers to speak. The public outcry was so loud that they recinded the invitation. The vast majority of write in letters to the newspaper were in agreement with the few dissenting opinions coming from local professors. Their acceptance of a radical point of view extends only to their doorstep. Any further and you can tell your story walking.
