I’m coming in somewhere in the 137th entry or so in this thread, and it seems to have gone far afield from the subject video.

This one is particularly poignant to me, as I have lived there, have relatives there, speak the language and have studied the history. Not only that, I have worn the uniform and boots of a Marine so I know somewhat what it is like to be a soldier amidst a foreign people.

I am glad history turned out more brightly than what this film warned against. I am guessing this film was made in the closing days of WWII or shortly thereafter. At the time, our intelligence types were made aware of NAZI programs such Wehrwolf program, which was a last-ditch Nazi plan, developed during the closing months of the Second World War, to create a German commando force which would operate behind enemy lines as the Allies advanced through the territory of Germany itself. Werwolf remained entirely ineffectual as a combat force, however, and in practical terms, its value as propaganda far outweighed its actual achievements.

But the German experience with Americans really was unlike almost anything in history. WWII was very much a product of the hateful French plan for Germany at the end of WWI, which was to humiliate and literally to bleed Germany white, with the costs of reparations.

People seem to forget that it really wasn’t the Germans who started WWI, it was the Austro-Hungarians (or the Hapsburgs, if you will) who sought any excuse to punish little Serbia.

But Prussia, Austro-Hungary and Italy were tied together in an alliance called the Central Powers, while the Triple Entente of Russia, France and England were similarly tied.

We defied the Soviet blockade of Berlin and flew in food supplies during the blockade to feed the people and the pilots who did, also did such things as tossing candybars under handkerchief parachutes down to the German children below.

Anyone who has served in infantry can also tell you that Americans are not traditionally brutal, but friendly with kids. In short order, chocolate and gum rations get handed to kids and the kids start to hang around, sometimes taking up running errands or shining boots.

American troops almost invariably gravitate to the local girls, or more accurately since it really is true that women pick their boyfriends, the local girls gravitate towards the American soldiers.
