Probability That Auto Dealers Were Picked For Closing Based On Politics Is “Eyebrow Raising”

An important update to what has now been dubbed “dealergate” that’s very worth your time to read, including this part:

This puzzled us. Why would there be a significant and highly positive correlation between dealer survival and Clinton donors? Granted, that P-Value (0.125) isn’t enough to reject the null hypothesis at 95% confidence intervals (our null hypothesis being that the effect is due to random chance), but a 12.5% chance of a Type I error in rejecting a null hypothesis (false rejection of a true hypothesis) is at least eyebrow raising. Most statistians would not call this a “find” as 95% confidence intervals are the gold standard for this sort of work. Nevertheless, it seems clear that something is going on here. Specifically, the somewhat low probability that the Clinton data showing higher survivability of Clinton donors could result just from pure chance. But why not better significance with any of the other variables? Why this stand out?
Then we got to thinking. Steven Rattner, the Car Czar, is married to Maureen White, one-time national finance chairman of the Democratic National Committee. What does Maureen do now? From her website:
Maureen White is currently Chairman of the Board of Overseers of The International Rescue Committee (IRC), a member of the North American Advisory Board for the London School of Economics, and a National Finance Chair of the Hillary Clinton for President Campaign. (emphasis ours)
That website looks dated, but you get the idea.
Again, we want to point out that our findings are preliminary and subject to change. But whatever the result, the Administration has made themselves very vulnerable by taking charge of the dealership closing decisions.

Indeed, as Doug Ross (who broke this story) notes: “It is incumbent that “Car Czar” Rattner and the Obama administration immediately disclose — with their vaunted ifull transparency’ — the methods used to select dealerships for closure.”
I don’t think there’s anything that’s been exposed to date that would lead any reasonable person to conclude that the car dealerships weren’t closed based on the political leanings of their owners, but certainly there’s nothing wrong with Obama being fully transparent about the selection process. After all, this is the first time in the history of the country that a Presidential administration has ordered thousands of privately-owned businesses closed. If the President is going to take that sort of power upon himself (the President should never have that kind of power, but I digress) he should at the very least be 100% transparent in his exercise of it.
Given Obama’s promises about transparency and accountability on the campaign trail you wouldn’t think that’d be a problem.
But we’ll just have to wait and see, I guess.

    Still kicking that dead horse?

That is all you have to refute rob?

I am also not sure how the Government can decide which car dealerships can stay open will others are closed? It doesn't pass the smell test or seem constitutional.

You can't refute conspiracy theories. Particularly when they're created by stems.

Great source by the way. A blog that tortures the data to produce nothing.

ive not seen anyone answer what % of dealers are lib and what were pubs to begin with. thats what matters more than anything.

if its 50/50 then you might have a problem.

A larger number of the dealers were republican donors. Considering how car dealers operate, trying to fuck you out of money all the time, it makes sense.

What is really funny about this non-issue is if was a private business, Conservatives would say that they have a right to fire whomever they want.

But since this is owned by the government, the conservatives now want special treatment and fairness.

So are conservatives pro socialism or are they pro free market? You really cant tell when they go about ranting like lunatics.

    Hannitized,

Your logic (or lack thereof) is astounding. A private business CAN fire who they want because it's their's. The US government cannot because the US government is the people. And, the people have to be treated equally.

That's how the Chicago political machine has always operated.

"Hannitized" shoots and fails, What is really funny about this non-issue is if was a private business, Conservatives would say that they have a right to fire whomever they want.

But since this is owned by the government, the conservatives now want special treatment and fairness.

One is freedom and free people making their own free choices.

    The other is not.

Is that too hard to understand or would you like to spew out more insults towards those who see that these are two completely different situations?

  • Stewartized

"You can`t refute conspiracy theories." Your`re right, Dino. I`ve tried debating several libtard 9-11 "truthers", and they`re just to stupid to talk to.

  • carrick

Stewartized, there's a difference between a refutation of a conspiracy theory and neglecting evidence that is in front of your face.

Why would it be surprising to learn that Republican auto dealers were closed preferentially by a largely Democratic controlled central government?

The real shock would be if that didn't happen.

Were you aware that military base closing also follow party lines based on who is in power? If you were, why are you acting like this is so "way out there"?

  • Bat One

I don't think there's any question that partisan politics played an integral, if not primary, role in the decision to close this dealership while allowing that one to remain open. Its the Chicago way.

But that said, I wonder by what authority Team Obama is directing the closure of ANY dealerships and directing the abrogation of lawful contracts between Chrysler and its network of dealers.

As far as I know, the ONLY legal authority for invalidating contracts between two private parties rests with the Judiciary… not the Executive.
