Pro-Abortion Democrats “Visibly Angry” Over Potential For A Deal With Pro-Life Rep. Stupak

I posted last night that Pelosi was apparently close to a deal with Rep. Bart Stupak, whose bloc of pro-life Democrats has been one of the chief hurdles Democrats have been working on getting around to pass the Senate health care bill in the House. Today comes news that pro-choice Democrats aren’t exactly happy with the dealings.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday evening met with a visibly angry Pro-Choice Caucus amid rumors from Democratic aides that the Speaker was working on a last-minute deal with Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) to give his abortion language a separate vote.
Leadership aides, including those in the Speaker’s office, would not comment, but a senior Democratic aide directly involved in the abortion debate said Pelosi appeared to have agreed to give Stupak a vote on an “enrollment resolution” offered by Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), a key Stupak ally.

Last night I speculated that Democrats likely have the votes on the health care bill and are now just wrangling to figure out what kind of deals they can cut to let some Dems who are facing tough re-election races in the coming year vote “no’ on the bill. I think that’s still right, and I think Pelosi’s dealing with Stupak is part of it.
Giving Stupak a vote on this amendment gives his bloc of pro-lifers some political cover in the coming election. And bringing Stupak’s bloc into the fold let’s Pelosi cut some so-called “blue dog” Democrats (like Rep. Earl Pomeroy here in North Dakota) loose to vote no against the bill.
As much as I hate to admit it, the Democrats have the votes to pass this abomination. All that’s left is figuring out how they’re going to vote for it.
