Pro-Abortion Crowd Freaks Out Over DNC Chief Allowing Anti-Abortion Specialty License Plates

Ah, that famous liberal tolerance for ideas different from their own:

Tim Kaine, the Virginia governor and President Barack Obama’s hand-picked choice as the head of the Democratic National Committee, infuriated abortion-rights groups Monday by signing legislation that gives abortion foes a long-sought victory.
Kaine brushed off intense lobbying by abortion rights supporters in Richmond to sign a bill that allows Virginia motorists to advertise their anti-abortion views by sporting “Choose Life” specialty license plates.
The revenue from the specialty plates would go to crisis-pregnancy centers, which many abortion-rights backers believe proslyetize against abortion and encourage women to keep unwanted children.
If Kaine were merely the governor of the Old Dominion, the move might have been less notable. Kaine—a Catholic who says he is personally opposed to abortion but pledged to leave the right to choose intact—won office in Virginia partly by seeking to reassure social conservatives.
But he is now on a national stage. And his decision could echo among women’s activists who are among the most powerful financial supporters of the party.

Let’s review here: First, the license plates are completely optional. Second, the full expense for the plates is paid by the person getting them.
So what’s the big deal? What’s the difference between a pro-life license plate, and a pro-life bumper sticker?

Perhaps not any image, but certainly we can pick and choose.

The question isn’t, should we be able to put any message on our plates. The question is, is it ok to put a pro-life message on our plates?

I think you need to stop and think about this one a little longer.

no….i think you need to. the question IS should we be able to put ANY message on our plates. just because YOU do or dont like this particular message is irrelevant.

a government item thats required by law to use public roadways is no place for a political statement, team fan sign or a bikini model. thats what printed ads, billboards, bumpers and t shirts are for.

The difference, I believe, is here:

"The revenue from the specialty plates would go to crisis-pregnancy centers, which many abortion-rights backers believe proslyetize against abortion and encourage women to keep unwanted children."

God forbid that a woman should hear another point of view regarding her body and her unborn child, whom she might decide to keep instead of lining Planned Homicide's pockets with even more money.

The plate is a reminder to kids having sex in the back seat of vehicles.

Government-made or not, I see no issue. Pro/Anti Abortion are not exclusively religious values. There is no mandate against Government embracing certain values, just no religions.

Same goes for the crisis centers. If they're not religiously affiliated, then shrug.

keep fund raising for your cause out of our government. unless of course…… you let me use our government to fund raise for causes im for like requiring ownership of fully automatic weapons, legalizing drugs and legalizing hookers. youd be cool with that, right?

    jimmypop,

Planned Parenthood is already government subsidized. The difference is, we have no choice about it. My money is taken at the point of a gun and given to people whose values are abhorrent to me. These license plates are completely voluntary.

Me thinks you protest too much and on the wrong issue. Specialty labeled plates where one can have a personal name emprinted on them have been around almost as long as cars so this is no big thing. This story is really about a group objecting merely because the message doesn't fit their distorted views. I'm sure that if the plate label was 'pro choice' they wouldn't complain.

If rob didn't agree, he would write, "Clearly there is a difference between a licence plate and a bumper sticker." The only reason he agrees is because he agree with the policy. He has thrown out his principles for passionate, emotional, romanticism again. They should offer anti-life, pro-choice plates too. If they ONLY offered pro choice plates, then do you think Rob's commentary would be identical? I don't think it would.

rob – is your position symmetrical in both cases or are you arguing without principles again?

  • Hannitized

Of course Rob iis arguing without principles again.

This is a classic issue of state getting involved in our lives where they ought not to.

Custom plates have been around, sure, but they are judged on their tact and if they are too racy, they are not approved.

    Jimmypop, is exactly right.
