President Bush: McCain Is A “True Conservative”

The President told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that he believes McCain will make his tax cuts permanent and will be a “true conservative,” but that he does have some convincing to do when it comes to the Republican base.

(CNN) — In an interview broadcast Sunday, President Bush offered to help Sen. John McCain make his case to conservatives if he becomes the Republican presidential nominee, saying there is “no doubt” McCain is a “true conservative.”
Speaking to “Fox News Sunday,” the president said McCain is “very strong” on national defense, “tough fiscally,” wants to make Bush’s tax cuts permanent, and opposes abortion rights. “His principles are sound and solid as far as I’m concerned,” the president said.

Of course that coming from the guy who gave us No Child Left Behind, the Medicare prescription drug entitlement seven years in the White House before finally vetoing a bill he considered too expensive isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.

Pardon, I meant to say that if the same agenda were being foisted on the US citizenry by a Democrat ….

I’ve defended Bush primarily because his detractors have been both deranged and liars of the first order. I have also refrained (by and large) from harsh criticism of his policy decisions which I have not agreed with as a consequence of the nature of his loudest critics and their tactics.

But the bottom line is that George Bush is not someone I’d rely on when it comes to evaluating someone else’s dedication to conservative principles.

    Rob,

This is exactly my point in saying that having McCain in is worse than HillaBoma. I take it from this last passage is that you felt a sense of loyalty to Bush, even though some of the things he was pushing were far from Conservative.

My guess is that if the same agenda were being foisted on the US citizenry, you — as a Republican — would feel no qualms in resisting, speaking out, what-have-you.

Even Rush eventually admitted ‘carrying water for those who didn’t deserve it. ‘

Bush and McCain truly are two peas in a pod.

If that’s an endorsement of how you think McCain will prosecute the Global War on Terror, then that’s mighty damn decent of you, Bill!

Might be time to consider that in addition to President Bush, John McCain has been endorsed in one way or another by Fred Thompson, Rudy Guiliani, Nancy Reagan, Gen. Norman Shwartzkoff, Ret., Ted Olsen, Saxby Chandliss, Bod Dole, Steve Forbes, Newt Gingrich, the Governors of Texas, Florida and California and countless newspapers including the Manchester NH Leader, the Miami Herald and the Detroit Free Press, among others.

    Rob,

You know, I’d kind of like to have a sit down dinner with George Bush after he leaves office. He strikes me as interesting and sincere, and someone I’d like to have a conversation with.

Following his election in 2000, I was hoping for a quiet and adult administration after the childish exuberance of Bubba’s administration. Didn’t work out that way due to circumstances we’d have all rather avoided.

    And?

Every single person on that list is simply endorcing the party candidate so that we don’t lose to the Dems. Thompson’s endorcement was lukewarm, at best. Gingrich’s too.

And let’s not neccessarily use Nancy Reagan as a stalwart of conservatism.

The left and the media, repeating myself, are the one’s who labeled Bush a core conservative (partially to continue the left/right conflict so they could gain political advantage (sadly) and partially in an attempt to demonize the term conservative the way liberal has been demonized in the past).

Granted he is more conservative then his Father, but even in 2000 he claimed the mantle of, “compassionate conservative.”

That just means squishy on economic and people issues and I knew that going in.

How the hell would Bush know what a “True Conservative” is? His moderate populism and weakness on illegal immigration is what got our party in this mess in the first place.

As a matter of fact, Bush and McCain truly are two peas in a pod.
