President Bush Blows His Reserves

Dean Barnett has a great wrap on the winners and losers in the amnesty fiasco.

One of his losers is President Bush:

4) THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION – I’ve admired this president for a long time, but I’ve reached a point where I’ve had it up to here (my hand is at my forehead) with this administration’s chronic obtuseness and arrogance. The top priority right now for the administration should be the war. And yet the president spent what little political capital he had trying to shove this atrocious immigration bill down the country’s throat. This whole gambit was the logical equivalent of Abraham Lincoln in February of 1864 seeking out the non-war related issue that would most effectively divide his base and then relentlessly championing that issue. That would have been dumb, right? And yet that’s exactly what President Bush did.

President Bush is going to need a united base come September if he wants to stay the course in Iraq. Given that consideration, calling 90% of that base bigots probably wasn’t a very good idea. Fickle, weak-kneed and misguided Republican senators like Dick Lugar are already preemptively declaring defeat.

Will the Republican base forgive the administration for its actions surrounding this bill? My guess is no. We’re moving on to finding another leader for the party, and in 7 months or so we’ll have one. In the meantime, thanks to this idiotic gambit, there’s a power vacuum right now in the White House.

Maybe the base can fill that vacuum. The only good news is that the past political fortnight showed that the Republican base, when enthusiastic, can have a dramatically positive effect on Republican politicians. If the base demands victory in Iraq as loudly as it demanded defeat for this immigration bill, the Republicans in congress will once again listen.

I don’t agree with that statement at all.  First of all, Bush will not be running for election so he will essentially be a non-factor in 2008 much like Clinton was in 2000.  Secondly, people have very short memories and are largely party affiliated regardless of the candidates.  Thirdly, the presidential election is primarly based on personalities and not policy. i.e. the candidate that has the most appeal usually wins.

"None are more unjust in their judgments of others than those who have a high opinion of themselves.” Charles Haddon Spurgeon 1834-1892, British Baptist Preacher

“Nothing in the world is more haughty than a man of moderate capacity when once raised to power.” Baron Wessenberg

Bush has made too many mistakes and is now suffering for his arrogance in believing that he could prosecute a war and not have to bring the people along with him. Katrina, Social Security Reform, Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants and other things have distracted his administration from the main task at hand - winning the war against Global Islamic Terrorism.

With my disappointments being made clear: He is still heads and shoulders above Kerry, Hillary, Edwards, Gore or any other Democrat I can think of! Why? 1. Because I do not believe you can appease Islamic terrorists, I believe they only understand force. 2. We would not have this great economy, we would have high taxes and an increased welfare state. So, I still prefer Bush with all his faults, which are many, to any of those socialist fools!

Bush and clan are rich and out of touch. They don’t have to live in or with the mess they were trying to create. After his term is over, he can retire to his ranch or go anywhere in the world that he wants while being kept from the rabble that he tried to create at tax payer expense. He will never have to endure the disrespect that these criminals show towards our laws and our country.

Illegal immigrants are criminals. They have stolen from American Citizens.

I don’t agree with that statement at all.

I don’t know what to think.  For one I’m through sticking up for the guy, but yes I’ll stick up for the war effort.  And if he gets another Supreme Court nomination and he nominates another Alito/Roberts I’ll support him there.

I won’t like the guy anymore but I’ll support him when he’s right.

I agree with everything in this post...except for “admiring george bush” he has been from the start a complete and utter “fucktard”.  It has just taken you this long to realize it.  Which is good, some folks still think he is worthwhile....fewer and fewer but congrats on seeing the light...good luck in 08…

sorry I spelled Anne of Ann Coulter wrong....apparently hell cracked open and she slithered back into the spotlight....

Watch your headlines Whistle.
Is that a re-enlistment bonus,
or does everyone get one?

Bush has made too many mistakes

Well, that slmost makes him a human, doesn’t it?  He sure didn’t mske many mistakes on his supreme court nominees (okay, Miera was a bad choice) and he didn’t make a mistake with ‘bringing the war to the enemy’ in Afghanistan and Iraq (okay the jury is still out).  Anyway, give the guy a break, his record is as good as any president in the last 50 years. They all made mistakes, even Reagan.

it looks like at least the President is still in the executive branch. How do we know? Because he is hiding behind executive privilege again.

With their traditional candor they say:

“With respect, it is with much regret that we are forced down this unfortunate path which we sought to avoid by finding grounds for mutual accommodation,” White House counsel Fred Fielding said in a letter to the chairmen of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. “We had hoped this matter could conclude with your committees receiving information in lieu of having to invoke executive privilege. Instead, we are at this conclusion.”

Got that? Let me paraphrase:

We were hoping to evade public scrutiny and hide our blood-thirsty political agenda through other means but, because the Congress is being so thorough and professional in its investigation, we have no other choice but to be fall back on the same childish, untrue and retarded excuse we’ve used in the past.

Cast in the best light, this administration is incompetent. Cast in the most realistic light, they are liars who consider themselves above the law and above accountability to the American people.

brad: With all due respect, I don’t think you have a clue what “executive privilege” means! It is a doctrine regarding the separation of powers in the government. (Don’t worry! They’ll cover this when you get to the eighth grade!)
There is no separation of powers issue in the amnesty debate.
The only “hiding” going on here is between you and “clues”. Find one and get back to us!

Are talking about the Clinton administration?  If so, I agree.

I think brad’s comments were stuck in Green Al Gore’s Internet since the late ‘90s!

Brad: ‘Hiding behind Executive Privilege’ and comments like ‘F*^#ard’ are symptoms of your advanced Bush Derangement Syndrome.

The majority of the work done by the Executive Branch is top secret because they must deal with the real world and to have Congress get that information and make it available to the public via leaks, which Congress leaking of sensitive documents has perfected, places people, delegate negotiations and intelligence efforts at risk. Further, the President must be able to get the widest range of advice and if that counsel is made public the President will only get very carefully crafted advice of no use to him as those counselling him will fear their words will be exposed. The President must recieve, review and consider options that if known could be misunderstood as being policy initiatives and could destroy our relationships with other countries. Therefore, the President must protect most of the documents in his possession during and in some cases long after he leaves office.

Under the doctrine of Three Separate but co-equal branches, if Congress had the right to demand documents or testimony from close counsellors of the President, then the Legislative Branch would be the superior branch of government, the Executive Branch would be subservient and Three Separate but Equal branches would no longer exist. If you think the President has any Constitutional or moral obligation to surrender any documents to the Legislative Branch then you believe something wholly contrary to our Constitution.

Wow.  Lots of hate spewing.

My Happy Dance (TM) aside over the bad bill failing, why the animosity?  I think bush thought it was a good idea, like he thought it was a good idea to pick Harriet Meiers (sp?)

I like Bush for the GWOT, good economy and doing what he says (disagree with a lot internal governance but he’s straightforward about it.) I just don’t think this is THE issue to define this decade.
