President Al Gore

I was asked recently, about the second “biggest unintentional blunders that liberals have committed in modern times.” That would be the Democrats failing to elect Al Gore President. I posted about it several weeks back in Proof Positive:

One of the scariest things to contemplate, is what would have happened if Al Gore had been President on 9/11/01 and what his response to the terrorists would have been?

Fortunately for us, we never had to find out. But the reason for Albert’s loss is one of the more amusing bits of irony in American history!

As I have pointed out in other venues, the Democrats have no one to blame but themselves that the exalted enviroweenie Algore is NOT the President of the United States!
The Republicans in the House impeached Clinton. The Linguine-spined Democrats in the Senate refused to convict. Because of their cowardice (or because Bill had something on them), Al Gore was NOT the incumbent President going into the 2000 elections. (The same Al who said he would have done things differently in Florida with Elian Gonzalez had he been President!)

So, the cowardly Democrats denied Al both the incumbency and the chance to improve his standing in Florida, either one of which would have undoubtedly tipped the race in his favor.

And so, you have only gutless Democrats to thank for why Al’s campaign slogan wasn’t: Re-Elect President Al Gore!

One of the two most delicious ironies I know!

Update: To be fair, I really should give the Dems another out. Extreme partisanship would have the same look as cowardice. (The results are still the same!)

Al would have lectured us about turning our cheeks and embracing whahbism!
They both want to turn the clock back to the 7th century for the unwashed masses!

Of course if AlGore had been able to carry either his own home state, Tennessee, or that of his boss, Arkansas, Florida would not have mattered at all, and Gore would have been president.

Its been said many times now, but the truth is that Democrats are their own worst enemy.

Check my reader blog about the comparative historical context of this versus the current divide among Republicans over John McCain.

Can I imagine a world with Al Gore PreZ? Yep- The US not hated throughout the world for occupying Iraq. 4000 American troops still alive. Not stuck in a quagmire. No one arguing over fictitious weapons of mass destruction. Money to fight the real enemies in Afghanistan.

Apparently I am not alone. Check out chicken hawks approval rating.

Not.  Even.  Close.  Gore and Clinton (both of them) claimed there were WMDs and Clinton sent cruise missiles into Iraq.  Gore would have invaded Afghanistan and insisted on Saddam complying with the WMD ban.  They did while they were in office.  It is revisionist history to think otherwise.

It may have kept the Democrat party sane and away from the hands of Moveon and Daily Kos had we elected Al Gore who would have stayed much more moderate than he has recently become.  The question is whether Gore went from consistently a moderate and veared to the hard left ideologically out of genuine desire or out of response to the Lieberman-Lamont, Howard Dean movement and far left controlling the party.

You can try to paint Gore as President as not invading Iraq or Afghanistan and perhaps he would have done what Clinton did--simply and ineffectively send cruise missiles into both of these countries.  But I think 9-11 would have prompted legitimate outrage at our failed attempts during the Clinton administration to deal with North Korea, Iraq, and Al Qaeda and he would have taken a hard line military response like the one Clinton and most of the Senate almost unanimously voted for in 2002-03.

This wasn’t just Bush so stop pretending that it was.  It was unanimous.  It is just that now in hindsight, Dems want to blame Bush alone and not hold their leaders that voted for the war accountable for their statements in support of the war and against Saddam.  All they can say is Bush lied, except that Gore and Clinton saw the same CIA reports that Bush did that led to the war.
