Powweb Web Hosting Sucks

Hello again. As you can see, Say Anything is back online. Kind of.
The template will be changing, this is just temporary. And there will likely be some bugs until we get everything ironed out, but for now this works.
For those of you who don’t know the recent outage was caused by a feud which erupted between myself and my webhost, Powweb. As far as price and bandwidth resources go they’re a great company, but when it comes time to get some support from them they’re terrible.
What started it all was when they shut my site down for what they told me later was an “abusive script.” At the time, however, all I got from them was a one-line email reading “MySQL abuse too many connections.” Aside from the subject line, which read “Account Suspension” that was the sum total of information contained in the email.
So I called Powweb and was told by a tech there that there was nothing they could do for me. They couldn’t tell me which script had caused the problem nor any of the particulars on the problem itself. They said that all I could do is reply to the abuse email and wait for a response. So I did that and waited.
And waited. And waited.

Thirty hours later I’d had enough. My site was down and I was losing traffic. I called them again and was told, again, that I had to wait for a response. I told them that waiting this long without even knowing what the problem was is unacceptable. I was told, essentially, “Too bad.”
So instead of layind down and taking it I put up a static page on my site to get around the MySQL problem and explain to you, my readers, what was going on. I included links to Powweb’s support chat room as well as their customer service email and telephone number. Many of you got in touch with Powweb asking for anwers to my problem. Rather than respond by addressing the issue, they deleted my site.
All of my images, all of Say Anything’s 5,000+ posts. Everything. Gone.
Luckily I had grabbed a backup of the posts and images before they did it. I still lost my templates, but those can be re-created, which we’re in the process of doing now.
After Powweb deleted everything I called them to ask for an explanation. I could understand them not wanting to do business with me in the future. That’s a childish response, but certainly their decision. But deleting everything on a whim? That’s a bullshit move.
The tech I talked to was pretty smug about the whole thing. He was obviously pretty familar with Say Anything and told me, in response to my question about giving me access to get what I needed off my account, that my “right wing tactics” weren’t going to work on them.
I’d hate to say that Powweb’s cancelation of my account was politically motivated, but its clear that at least one technician their who worked on my site’s hosting holds some biases. Regardless, their handling of my situation was totally unprofessional.
So, in the future, those of you looking for web hosting would do well to steer clear of this company. There are simply too many other hosting companies out there for you to take a chance on going through something I like I’ve been through in the last few days.
Anyway, I’ll be continuing to work on getting Say Anything back to what it was before all of this over the next few days. In the mean time, you could really help me out by donating a few bucks (if you haven’t already) to helping me pay for the new hosting package and template design. My blogging budget wasn’t prepared for this Powweb debacle and the whole thing has hit me rather hard in the wallet.

Wonder if it had anything to do with your item on Reuters and the DSM memos? I was reading Wizbang’s 6/22/05 item entitled “Reuters “Seals” their own fate” and when I clicked on the link to your article, I couldn’t find it:

Looks like the server deletion of your work is date-coincident.

Has anyone had a problem with Powwebs’s account migration, security certificate mismatch and emails being tagged with your IP address, Browser Information and operating system.

I’ve been using Poowweb for two years. I found it very good for speed of access until about 6 months ago, even though my pages have many (properly optimised) photographs. My site now takes forever to access, if at all. Powweb say that there is no problem at their end, and have suggested solutions, that have not improved things in any way. The problem hasn’t been with me as I had changed nothing, and this issue is encountered from other computers with other ISPs and with all browsers. What is telling is trying to access the Powweb main page, which is just as difficult. I have given this company enough time to sort out their shortcomings, and intend changing my web host; which one to choose seems a nightmare. http://www.malvernhostick.com

I have been a customer of Powweb for over 8 years. In the last two, my site, which has consistently looged more than 1 million per month, has now dopped to around 100,000 per month, plus my forum and my search engine have stopped working, and can’t be fixed. Is it because of the new owners? I don’t know, but suspect it is from the limits they put on their servers. I am moving from Powweb today.

I like powwebs, I know someone who uses it and it is amazing. My host, however is not. I use netfirms.com currentyl. DON’T EVER EVER EVER do that!!! It is always down, and when I can access the site It only works about 40% of the time, the other times I get mysql errors, then support says it is my code! I am using SMF! I know there is no problem in the code. They don’t even help you. Powwebs is a lot better than netfirms.

Go ahead and delete this post if you want because I am adding a positive note about Powweb. I’ve had them as my hosting company since ’03 and went through their rather large upgrade in ’05 when this negative post was made. Yes, they had some issues at that time, but were fixed since then. They are by far the best hosting company at the best price and I have three sites hosted by them. Anytime I had problems, I could submit a ticket and it would get resolved anytime between an hour to a few days. I will never switch and will always recommend them to others.

we left powweb and went to bluehost.com gary engel is an ass in fact when they migrate they messed up our site so bad they gave us a 2 year credit and now they are giving us a refund on the 2 year credit…. powweb sucks call gary at 781-852-3302 or email him at gary@powweb-inc.com or their corporate office is 1-866-897-5421

Yeah! powweb is really bad hosting. It isn’t very cheap and have a lot downtime. Their servers are fast if you have plain html, but very slow processing php scripts.
I lost my $90 with the powweb plan.

Now, I’m using Byethost hosting (byethost.com) (almost 2 years). I only pay $2.99/month, very fast and 0 downtime. You can test their services using any of the free plans that they have. They really have a good customer service, always answers and resolve every problem that I had.

23 powweb is the worst. i have been working with them since two weeks for Blackberry and web site and emal service. despite paying 2 years in advance plus so much a month, I have yet to be operational on their website. I have spoken to every Indian in India, but their response isthey will have TIER 2 to contact me. TIER 2 has not called for 48 hours of no email service. I believe that TIER 2 in POWWEB does not exist, or POWWEB is out ofbusiness except for one guy in the US who is receiving all funds and doing nothing for the customer.

  • Wasting Valueable Time

Powweb sucks for coders… I was on the phone with the guy from Powweb and his statements “We have the most unique control panel in the world”. What he missed out on was that the ending part of the sentence that might have went like this “that sucks for anyone who writes code because we shut down all imperatives directives and it is our main method to keep our server load low, which also helps us with hiring incompetent staff at low wages”.

  • http://dndelectronics.com/ markmark

i have an open ticket with powweb about there scanning internal email but not letting you white list it so that it dosnt get scanned. you can white list external email but not internal emails. whe i disagreed with him and said that this dosnt make any sence his idea was to yell and scream at me at the top of his lungs. hope this isnt powwebs idea of professional service. it isnt mine.

  • wolleybus

Back in June 2005, I signed up for Powweb. I left 3 months later. Not because the service provided was bad, but because I had figured out how to host my web site from home using my DSL connection.

I recently started to search for a web host company, because I’ve decided to stop self-hosting. Because of my “OK” experience with Powweb, they were the “company to beat” in searching for a hosting company. I had asked a reseller question on the forum back in January 2007, and the responses were polite, if not somewhat confusing.

Anyway, over the past month or so, I had been doing a lot of research and monitoring of hosting company forums, trying to decide which one gets my money. During this research, I noticed a disturbing trend on the Powweb forum. The moderators appeared to be overly oppressive when it came to members criticizing Powweb. Because of this, Powweb went from being on the top of my prospects to being completely dropped from consideration.

This past Sunday, I saw a thread on the forum titled “Closing threads that are critical of powweb”. So, I took a look, and it fit right in with what I had already concluded. Trying to provide some constructive criticism to the moderators, I posted to the thread my obervations as a former customer, and that the moderators might want to consider the signal they are sending to potential customers.

This post prompted a smart-assed, condescending reply from the moderator “Doc C”. I responded to his post, by calmly trying to explain and defend my post. This post was blocked for over an hour, and was only released after I called Powweb support to file a formal complaint. When it was finally released, I was then attacked by another moderator, “IanS”. I offered another post in defense, and was attacked by IanS again. At this point, it occured to me that this was extremely odd behavior by the moderators, so I stopped posting anything. I was absolutely stunned by what followed. Doc C and IanS made couple of posts intimating that they, as moderators, were not above inflaming a thread for amusement.

If that wasn’t enough, IanS further tried to taunt me into another post by doing something that I’ve never seen a moderator do on any forum I have ever visited. This moron posted that the thread would be closed in about 10 hours, so if anyone wanted to make any more comments, do so before then.

I waited until the thread was closed, and on Monday morning I called the Endurance main office. I reaffirmed my desire to follow through on my formal complaint on both Doc C and IanS, letting Endurance CS know, in no uncertain terms, that these moderators are juvenile, unprofessional, and projecting a very negative image for Powweb. I assured them that I will be broadcasting this experience across the internet.

The thread can be found here…

    http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?s=22c133493e2bfa975502ef3990c6ccf6&t=75564

They have not deleted it yet. However, if they ever do delete it, I’ve got a copy of it archived. And, if it disappears at Powweb, I will publish the archive on my web site.

Powweb is the most unprofessional web hosting company in existence today. They won’t be around much longer with the image they and their moderators are projecting to the world. May the bastards go belly-up in bankruptcy soon!

seriously HORRIBLE HOST. i had been with them about 5 years and the last year they just went off the deep end. extremely horrible support team, always phone on hold, problems always arise that you would never encounter on a decent host, sh1t stops working all the time. i finally realized i get what i pay for.. when you are losing serious revenu from your sites, its not worth saving $30 a month

    I must revise that statement.
One of my 3 sites on powweb is now super slow or down. The mysql sever 12 is just choked and tanked.
Taking 200 seconds at times to render my homepage on that site running wordpress.

At times for the last 3 months the site has been slow or down not connecting to mysql 12 at all but timing out. This is a major cause of wordpress being slow around the web IMO. But here its just to much… 30-60 seconds to render some pages… the old powweb on same site .3 to 1 second…

They promote instant install on cms, word press or what ever but its tanking the servers! For months!
This is a red light emergency! A ship wreck!
Yet it goes on and on and on … the only place you can see the real story is in the user outage form BUT you must be a registered user to even see it.. or check the mysql thread if you cant get that….
I liked powweb but this is taking to long! Months of slow service and always its coming and yet they promote Install central pulling in 100′s if not thousands of mysql dbases its really out of control I would wait 3-6 months before to see if they can get act togeather…

Its a train wreck. Several times this week site is dead down! And many times 60+ second load time!

  • http://www.eoran.com/ Emmanuel

    Cool layout.
I disagree with the powweb thing; I have got good support from them… not super fast, but not bad. Anyway they’re not my favourites… :P

  • http://www.holditupforridicule.com/ Ian Duncan Smith

Er….Anyone tried to load Powweb.com or their sites recently? I’ve had Page Not Found for half an hour, on the main Powweb site! Worried!

  • Jack Shappa

I was a Powweb customer for a couple years and everything was fine. Then they were bought out by a different hosting company a while back and it went absolutely in the toilet. Not only is their support garbage, but their server request speed also got so bad that my site would time-out half the time for no good reason. I gave them plenty of chances. They even deleted my posts on their forum asking for help (I assume because it shined a light on their issues). I dumped them and good riddance. They are the worst.

  • http://www.thegreatsatan.com/ Gabriel Chapman

Powweb over promised their ability to deliver. I posted a critical post on their forums, not only was the post deleted, but my account was banned.

Their mysql problems have existed for over a month. Basic quality of service is non-existant. Easy to serve basic webpages or photo galleries take minutes to load. Support is non-responsive or just says that.

  • SCA

yea me 2, i cant log in on powweb and my website hosted on powweb

  • http://www.agranddesign.org/ Jay

This is great…I googled “powweb customer service” and this was the 2nd in the listing…after powweb’s actual customer service page.

I’m in the process of cancelling my account with them. They don’t let you cancel online (too easy), so you have to call. I’ve been on hold for 45 minutes with no sign of my call being taken soon. Horrid.

As far as the politics goes, there may be something to it. I read on Little Green Footballs numerous times that they are owned by some Islamic activist groups. Not sure how credible that is, though.

    Ugh

  • Jack Slipper

I’ve been with Powweb since 2005. Until a year or so ago they were good and efficient. Since then this outfit has been unreliable and unresponsive. My site, on which there have been no real changes, now takes ages to load. The Powweb website itself often takes ages to load too, and its OPS is frequently flakey and un-logonable. Forget their Live Email Help. You pose an issue, and quick as a flash (only thing they are quick at) a pro-forma is presented, and before you can write any reply, they end the chat. This has happened three times in the last two weeks.

Powweb is now the pits and I always recommend keeping well clear. As you might imagine, I am now looking for a new web host, even though I’ve got 12 months to run. I’m prepared to lose the money to rid myself of this incompetent bunch of cowboys.

we are a Community who creates alternative linux firmwares for all NAS-products from buffalo technology. after one year powweb threatend us to delete the whole downloadsection we had…..and gave us 3 days to get everything off the server.

We only used 10 % of the granted bandwidth….so this is more than ridiculous.

    POWWEB SUCKS. BOYCOTT THEM!

  • http://allianceforprogress.com/ John Maloney

I hosted 15 websites with VistaPages.com On April 1st, the entire server my account was hosted on was infected and my service was not secure for weeks while they told me they were fixing it. The hack ruined sites from many accounts, just check their forum or the web. You will find many people upset with their reliability.

When they didn’t fix the sites, I asked to have my domains pointed to another host. I have been trying to get them to point, (they don’t allow me access to my domain name or I would do it myself). But now weeks later they tell me they will not point the domains, and that I will have to pay for them to be transferred to another domain host in order to point the domains.

    Can you believe it?

Then, my accounts were cancelled, and I get no refund for the many months left on my account. (I prepaid for a year on all the accounts I had)

I asked them about their uptime guarantee, and they pointed me to two different contracts, (the second one was a hidden contract that attempts to disclaim the uptime guarantee), it looks exactly the same but has different clauses referring to the uptime guarantee. According to the contract, it can be updated at any time, and clients will have to just deal with the changes. (You can see the contracts at:http://vistapages.com/legal/tos.php)

    Dont tout Vistapages just yet.

    Powweb sucks.
I’ve been a client of theirs since 2001, and ever since the migration last year, I’ve had nothing but problems.

I now have over 30 sites hosted there, and at one time recommended them to everyone based on good customer service, great features, and great price.

    No more.

I am in the process of researching other webhosts so I can transfer all of my sites elsewhere.

Customer service has been horrible, and incidentally, I never even NEEDEDtheir customer support until the migration last year.

    Coincidence? No.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from Powweb hosting.

  • http://eflgeek.com/ EFL Geek

Holy Crap! that’s really shitty. I moved from POWWEB in mid May because of the huge amounts of downtime and crappy customer service and lack of communication. I”ve noticed several POWWEB refugees at my new host forums.

Sorry to hear you had such a terrible experience. Who is your new host?

  • Christina

I’m the furthest thing from a conservative, and they have screwed me over ROYALLY. Did you know that a company is allowed to contract with you indefinitely and charge your credit card at will..even two and three years after you first cancl with them? Powweb is literally a demon. It’s just a bowl full of demons pretending to be incompetent to wear you down enough so that you’ll consent to unreasonable charges WHEN THEY DECIDE to let you out of your sentence. These people literally think that once you buy from them, it’s a lifetime contract. STAY AWAY.

  • http://daspoesis.com/ Das Poesis

Most web hosting companies have these standard practices when it comes to poorly written scripts or
to mysql issues, you will find that they will simply shut your site down since is on a shared platform, meaning you are bringing down the server – usually there are about 800 to 1000 users affected by your incident. I find it hard to believe that this was politically charged and that the intentions were of malice, I work for a webhosting company (now powweb) and here as in many other companies we treat mysql issues the same, we can either wait for the customer to fix the issue of handle 800 calls in 40 minutes, (make a guess on which road we are gonna take)often times most of us techs don’t even look at the content of website before shutting it down. I have been with powweb for about a year and enjoy their service, I must say I have only called them once.

  • Mineraledge

Thanks For The Advise On The Reasons Not To Use Powweb. I Have Just Finished With Lunarpages After Only 3 Weeks of Frustration Of Not Being Able To Contact Them With Problems And When I Did Recieving Advise Which Had Nothing To Do With The Problems I Was Having.I might Try “Byethost”.

  • http://moyogo.com/ Frank

PowWeb did the same to me, permanently and irrevocably deleted my website in the middle of the night, because somebody had emailed them with the allegation I was violating his Copyright (which was not true at all, it was a dirty trick by a competitor to get my site off the air).

I removed the material in question (even though it did not violate Copyright, but whatever I did to tell this to PowWeb, PowWeb remained mute.

I know of more people with similar complaints regarding PowWeb. They are unpredictable and unreliable, and they don’t respond to service emails. I went through many hosting providers in the past, and PowWeb was by far the worst.

  • http://www.nosalgas.com/ HART

So you were the “too many connections guy” lol!!! MySQL for my site was crap for weeks.

Btw, i understand they cant say wich script is causing trouble, the only see that u have a million connections to the BD, but not from wich script. So, obviusly its supposed you know your site code, not your hosting company…

And im not defending powweb, they tech team suck… like when they changed the BD from UTF to ISO every damn week… but i have to say, that you must be responsible for your bad scripts. ;)

I’m glad that I found this site, mostly because today — March 7, 2008 — my sites are down too. That means, as Jonathan indicated, that there is a system-wide problem going on right now.

PowWeb is not for n00bs. It is also not for people who do not know PHP, MySQL, or, most importantly, the parts of each that work together in harmony. For a forum, you rarely need more than a few open connections at once. The reason your site was taken down is because you didn’t know how to do this.

Wow, you really hounded Reuters well! And it shows they were trying to fool their readers.

  • http://www.webhostingart.com/ web hosting

Wow, another web hosting related horror story. There are hundreds experiences like yours all over Internet for many web hosts, but this surpass everything I have ever read. Personally, I don’t trust web hosting companies that offer unlimited resources (and Powweb is one of them). They cancel your account basically without any excuse and this is enough to stay away from them. If they demonstrate such irresponsibility to a well known website like yours, then what will happen to a webmaster which has a tiny website? How can a webmaster defend himself? The only way is to tell everyone what is happening. Every web hosting company afraids bad publicity and this is unfortunately our only weapon against such irrational actions…

  • CrazyMon

I’m sorry to hear your experience with your previous hosting company.

I think the idea of sharing VPS server and splitting the monthly payment say between 5 people is far better than hosting on over crowded servers.

I have been with midphase, siteground, godaddy.

godaddy is useful for domain registerations, i received NO support when I had a hosting account with them, so I cancelled it out.

siteground is funny they used to be strict on many aspects and still are. but they don’t delete websites, yet they have this ‘special’ server for certain websites that take up more? than the allocated space (though I have no idea how) and this special server stuff will make you loose many features that is supposed to be part of the hosting package.

midphase was a bad experience to me , at one point they only had one single mysQl database, enough to freak me up.

all hosting companies are like this, unless u go on a VPS server then ur less likely to face trouble due to bandwidth or other problems concerning data storage.

powweb live help is a crap, it’s like a mail box, u drop in your “help letter” and then you will be requested to say the ‘magic word’ or they will not listen to your problem.

It is likely that these staff will say ‘al right, you will receive email from our help desk’ and then the help desk will be like ‘hmm it seems you need to do things manually’ LOL man these guys are funny.

you go to midphase now they probably treat you like princess, siteground oh yeah you’ll be a VIP, but in any hosting companies, ask the people who have been there, they will tell you lot of hosting tales gone bad.

come to think of it, it’s rather better to have your own server!

    Very interesting thread….food for thought.

We have used powweb to host our business site for 10 years now and have very rarely had any problems. Recently our email was comprimised and the online help walked my wife and I through it. I don’t know if I’ll switch, I am still satisfied with the service we receive, but I will definitely be more cautious and monitor the service more carefully. Still, for us it has been a good bang for the buck.

POWWEB ABSOLUTELY SUCKSSSSSSS!!!!!! I apologize for the excessive caps, but POWWEB F-IN SUCKS THE BIG ONE! I would love to spend the rest of my life telling everyone in the world what a big sham this company is. They off unlimited bandwidth and storage but they closed my site down because “it is causing a strain on their servers!” It only gets 200-400 hits a day and I’m using not even 1 percent of my bandwidth. DO NOT OFFER SOMETHING IF YOU CAN’T LIVE UP TO IT!

AND THAT’S NOT EVEN ALL OF IT!! I have been an affiliate with them for 2 years sending THOUSANDS OF HITS through my affiliate link, and even assisted several clients with the signup process WATCHING them type in my referral code… AND NO AFFILIATE COMMISSIONS. NOT ONE!!!

POWWEB F-IN SUCKS DO NOT USE THEM IF YOU PLAN ON HAVING A REAL WEBSITE. The only thing they are good for is NOTHING

Been battling Powweb for 3 month on so called DOS attacks on Cluster 2. They say tey had it fixed back and forth about 10 times. Then one day I tried to call their Cust Serv. States that their phones will be down all day for service. This place is UNBELIEVABLE. They couldn’t even properly configure a new firewall for Cluster 2 without screwing everyone up for 2 days. Out of the last 3 months my business site has been down approx. 45 days. I’m too busy to switch but, alas the problem has risen again recently. Called 3 different people on Cust. Serv line and none of them knew what the problem was or when it would be fixed. I had requested 3 times to be transferred to another cluster/server and they actually had the balls to say “no, it is to much work”! I asked for who?? They said “Us” Friggin pathetic. I must have spoken with 20 different Cust. Serv. agents in the last 3 months and the sad part is that only 1 was remotely helpful and sympathetic. They seem to have problems with high employee turnover and you can certainly tell by their phone mannerisms that they simply don’t care. Tomorrow may be the day Powweb! Good bye!

powweb was facing problem with their mysql database, where the usage was not controlled and resulting is slower server in general. Because certain user is over using.

Its more and more web hosting provider is overselling their hosting plan. And the bad effect is what we see in this thread.

  • Frank Z

I can attest to the horrible customer service of PowWeb. I made the “mistake” of not setting my account to auto-renew. So my site lapsed. Now normally, with other sites, you can still login and renew after the fact. I was allowed to login to the admin site but the renew was disabled. I told them that this was stupid because at that point the money is guaranteed.

The customer service rep pissed on me and then said he refused to help me until he’d received “further confirmation” that I would renew. I have never seen a business so blatantly refuse to accept money as them.

Also, they have had shitty webmail software for months that they didn’t bother to fix. I ended installing squirrel mail myself to get around it. I mentioned this in the email to them and the reps response was that using web mail leave me succeptible to spyware and I should be using my desktop email client anyway.

Then he went on to say that they’ve been in business since 1999 and they survived the dotcom fall. Whoop de do! So did I! That they made it in spite of the fact that they piss on their customers does not impress me! Impress me with customer service instead! Powweb sucks!!!!

  • http://www.thenewbreed.tv/ thenewbreed

For the record, we never got a minute of free service from Powweb and barely even an apology even when due to Billing errors our site(s) went down for days, had the domain expire and all kinds of other crap.

We are with Siteground now and so far, so good.

  • http://frankz.emilhouse.com/ Frank Z

I basically implemented an emergency transition plan to get off of their servers. Heres’s what you do.

First, do a domain transfer from OpenSRS to GoDaddy. They give you a year free on top of the rest of your registration period. For a limited time, you also get email. I suggest taking advantage of this as you DON’T want your email hosted by them. I lost a day of email due to their bullshit and will never trust them with my email. Email is critical to my business and after my last outage, I can’t trust them with that. For me, web services are not critical so they are still cost effective with regards to that.

Then, get your DNS elsewhere. Have it point to the Powweb address while you prepare your new servers. Make sure you make your MX record point to your “offsite” email server and use powweb as a backup. I have powweb mail forwarded to my Gmail address so it’s not stored on their machines (I REALLY don’t can’t trust them).

When you’re ready to start with your new server, just change your DNS record and you can cancel Powweb. I plan on doing so once my terms are over. I owned 5 sites with them and they screwed me so royally that it’s worth the temporary pain to get away from them. I’m advising my customers to come with me as well.

  • http://www.hosting-finder.com/ Hosting admin

I’ve read a lot of bad coments about Powweb recently. At first I just didn’t pay attention to them but with each new I start to believe.

  • http://www.kangmi.org/ kangmi

I’m experiencing a similiar (but not identical) problem with Powweb. On October 4, I had my site (www.kangmi.org) shut down because of an abusive script. The notification e-mail gave me no more information, so I asked for an explanation. The reply:

I have reinstated your ability to run scripts. It appears that youre comments section was being spammed and this is what caused your resource usgae to increase. I would suggest that you protect the scripts used for comments on your site and if possible, disallow anonymous comment posting. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns.

I turned on comment moderation (I am currently mostly inactive, so I rarely get comments anyway) for all of my sites and left it at that until last Thursday, when I took the morning off work to fully address the problem.

On Friday, I received a warning message that I was using too many resources and that unless I responded within 48 hours, they were going to turn off my account and recommend that I find another host.

I immediately responded that I had implemented a fix for the referrer spam I had been receiving (and that is the apparent source of much of the activity), but I got shut off on Monday afternoon anyway (since Thursday, my bandwidth usage has fallen dramatically, apparently due to the fix I implemented). Powweb said that I might be able to get turned back on in 7 days if I didn’t abuse resources in the meantime.

After a customer service letter to them expressing my disatisfaction, they turned my http service back on, but of course they’ll be monitoring my usage this week. Not for the first time, I asked how I could monitor my own resource usage (other than bandwidth…I use less than 3GB of bandwidth per month, much less if you throw out referrer activity). Their reply:

We do run an internal system audit to determine top resource users which is not available to end users [thus there is absolutely no way I can monitor it myself]. We host over 70K websites and we have only contact about 15 customers so far [I am in privileged company]. If you go above the allowed resource limits, will contact you again.

I have suffered numerous cluster 02 outages this year and have previously considered changing hosts. Now seems like a good time, but oh! the hassle. The hassle has prevented me from doing it. Powweb is my first host. I will not be sorry to leave, but the logistics of moving will require some research.

  • http://www.madridteacher.com/ MadridTeacher

Hi, I currently have a huge problem with Powweb I’d like to tell people about and I hope you will let me post it to this page. If have a problem with that, just delete the post. This is something I’ve just posted to my site:

Announcement, Apology and Explanation: Temporary Deterioriation or Disruption in Service while Transferring to a New WebHost

1,000s of Chrysler and GM car dealers received letters this week terminating their relationships with these two companies this week. My webhost went off the deep end as well and they said I had to remove all of the photos, videos and sound files from MadridTeacher.com by Friday, May 15, or else they would delete all of them themselves.

This though the whole moving process for a 27Gb website will take maybe a week or two. Obviously, I have found a new host and am moving MadridTeacher.com there but it’s an incredibly slow process. However, I have no choice but to try delay pointing the DNS/URL to the new host till I get everything uploaded there. I didn’t get a chance to ask for more time, In their response to my request for more information they said “I’m sorry, but unfortunately I can not extend the time allowed; your files will be deleted if you haven’t removed them Friday May 15, 2009.” And I hadn’t even asked the question “can I have more time?” yet. They beat me to the punch. But, I will try by all means possible to upload all of the MadridTeacher.com’s advertisers’ pages, texts, photos, logos, etc. first to minimize any sort of disruption to you. Videos and photos of Madrid, especially, will have to wait till later. I think that most of this first phase is already done, but, in any case, you may unfortunately experience some disruption in services at some point in time while I am troubleshooting this problem, and I can’t be sure exactly when.

As a deeper explanation of the situation, I will simply state that my website’s host for the past 5 or 6 years till May 14, 2009 seems to me to have melted down. (Understandably, this is the beginning of the end of this relationship.) According to entries on their forum: http://forums.powweb.com/showthread.php?p=469795 (they may no longer be there), they gave some or all of the sites hosted there with over 15Gb of harddisk usage 2-3 days till sometime Friday to get rid of all of their videos, photos and sound files (from Wednesday morning) or else they would delete them. At the very least, this is what happened to me. I contacted them via a message from my control panel, but they did not give me a more specific explanation or a clearer response as to why. In fact, they further confused me with a self-contradictory “This is not due to any particular file type or amount of files” in their response.

I confirmed this exasperating situation over the phone with technical support, which absurdly recommended two other websites which I could contract where I could store my files and simply link to them from MadridTeacher. Even my tiny little sound files with vocabulary words such as “yellow,” “red,” etc. for students were to be removed.

My apologies to MadridTeacher.com’s clients for any problems that this host’s breakdown in service quality may cause us, but I was just given no warning and very little time to react. This host used to be truly great and unbelievably they even got to the point where they were offering unlimited bandwidth and harddisk space though in my control panel I actually had a limit on harddisk space – I was using less than 10% of these 300 Gb – and a limit on bandwidth – I was using less than 5% of these 3,000 Gb. The only thing I can happened is that they’ve been caught with their pants down by the deepening recession.
I want to be perfectly clear about this for my clients and visitors’ sake so they will know that I did absolutely nothing to deserve this treatment nor was there ever even an inkling that something like this might happen. These folks, in my opinion, are at the very best clearly behaving in an unprofessional, improper and informal way. At worst, emotionally speaking, other vocabulary words such as “false advertisers” and “shameless scoundrels” also come to mind, but I can’t be sure if they can legally be applied to them due to this situation.

Read more, including their letters here: http://www.madridteacher.com/articles/powweb.com-problems.htm (you have a limit on the number of characters I can place here).

  • Goth

Wow, after looking at your powweb server (Web server hosts 5794 websites) I didn’t have a chance for a positive experience. I have double the amount of sites on mine.

BTW Frank, the first thing I did was transfer the domain to godaddy (Weird how people think alike.), then secure another host. Though I still use the powweb space to host non essential 200+ mb pre production files (still have over 6 months left from 1 year prepay) got to make myself feel like I got something positive from the overall negative experience.

  • stfu

LOL! Look how slowly Powweb.com loads. If their servers are this sucky for their own official website, how on earth do they expect to handle anyone else’s? Ever since Endurance took over and kept screwing us over, we’ve taken all our sites elsewhere and never looked back.

  • http://www.gossimer.biz/ Linux Hosting

This is truly a great read for me!! I love the quality information and news your blog provides :) I have you bookmarked to show this to my brother!

Follow-up on my powweb experience. I think I found the source of powwebs problems. A lookup of my domain name using “http://www.whois.sc/” revealed ed something most whois engines don’t, namely, how many websites the individual server hosts, to my astonishment, mine held over 11,000 sites.

11,0000 sites!? They’re over selling and inconsiderate, along with juvenile and too cheap to buy more servers. So basically they’re knowingly ripping people off.

I’ve moved to hostgator and am enjoying fast servers and beautifully running mysql database functions, sever loads usually hover around 0.2 – 0.4 percent and when my heavy CMS site (blog and forum) gets going it very seldom goes over 1 percent and when it does, it hovers around get 1.2 -1.4 percent.

When I’ve been with them a month now, and researched thoroughly before joining them. What got me was the hostgator sites I did lookups on were hosting from 4 to 500 sites per server (compared to powwebs 11,000)and when i signed up mine had 170 sites on it, now its around 300 and runs without a hiccup.

  • http://www.strive4impact.com/ Jonathan

To the commenter above, you’re weird.

It’s not just my site that’s down. All of Powweb is down for Comcast users.

The reason is because Comcast appears to be blocking all connections to Powweb.

For anyone experiencing this issue, you can send a message to Comcast at one (or all) of the following:
    blacklist_comcastnet@cable.comcast.com
    abuse [at] att.net
    addrmgt [at] qsun.att.com
    qhoang [at] att.com

and request that they remove the block.

    Here’s the message I sent.

As of approximately 3PM Mountain March 7, 2008, you have blocked access to a company called Powweb, and ALL sites hosted on their servers.

    http://www.Powweb.com
    IP address : 65.254.250.20
    ISP : Endurance International Group
    Organization : Endurance International Group
    Location : US, United States
    City : Burlington, MA 01803
    Latitude : 42°50’51″ North
    Longitude : 71°20’47″ West

This happened once in August of 2007 as well.

This block you have placed on their IP block includes the 10,000+ sites hosted there.

It means that your Comcast customers can not access all of these sites, or, if they are customers of Powweb, it means that they can not access their web site’s email via Outlook or SquirrelMail.

I don’t know what the offending site was that caused this block, but please, look into this matter at your VERY earliest convenience, and clear it up as soon as possible.

    Thank-you,

  • http://www.hart.nosalgas.com/ HART

Jay, i had the same problem when i wanted to cancel my previous account on powweb, but you can contact them on email to cancel it. ;)

I’ve actually had a really good experience with Poweb so far. Once they went down, and then I got two free months of service. Once I needed help with setting up a SQL database, and their support chatroom got me fixed up in a matter of minutes. Although my site is more of a means for me to access my own files remotely instead of posting up a website… so I may not run into the usual web hosting issues as everyone else.

11,0000 sites!? They’re over selling and inconsiderate, along with juvenile and too cheap to buy more servers. So basically they’re knowingly ripping people off.

there aren’t 11,000 sites on one server, the servers are clustered for load balancing.

  • thomas smith

I was hosting at powweb but they have a tendency to delete your files if you don’t pay then on time. I called technical support after being 6th in the que and 1 hour on hold. Then i get this smug technicain on the phone and told me that all my files were deleted because i took over 7 days to contact them to make the a payment. To top it off he told me that files on the server are not powwebs responsibility that i had to have back ups but the way he told me he made me fell like a total idiot. I will not recommed this company at all i am spreading the word about this shitty company and it’s practices.

  • Bwamba Chavez

Powweb is awful. As a web designer who has various clients who purchased Powweb before I could say no, I’m amazed that with ALL of them I’ve run into customer service problems. In one case they deleted a client’s web site and then said they could not restore it (!!!). In addition they had changed the account password, so we couldn’t log in to upload the site… we immediately changed hosts.

A previous post mentions: “Powweb has given me problems in the past and I got mad asked for amends and then everything worked out between us… You gotta stick with a relationship and make it work. ”

Sure, but sometimes enough is enough. If your girlfriend cheats on you you wouldn’t stick with her either.

On a final note, I was amused that when I cancelled my own Powweb account, the salesman begging me to stay with them wrote me an email chock full of spelling mistakes. It’s in the details, folks.

They said our technical team working on it. Its also a month ago. Now what should I say? They can’t install a God damn script within a single month! Moreover their server is now too much fkin slow. Powweb simply sux :) .

  • arnolfo Santoro

I’ve been using Powweb for 5 years and I’ve had consistent trouble with them. Specifically email trouble. I’ve been on thier Chatlines more hours than I care to remember and my mail still has days where it will not send-not receive-not accept password….The tech support never really helps beyond telling me to check my settings, as if I randomly change my settings just to have a reason to contact them.

    I am done. It’s November 1, 2006. 8:00 pm and the whole POWWEB site/servers are gone. No Mail-no site-no customer site….POOF.

My reply from the CEO of bluehost when I posted the above to his blog:
No where does it say we will give you a full refund, and you most CERTAINLY were not down anywhere near 40 hours. Give me a break! Take your $$$ and go find a different host.

We never say anywhere we will give you your money back after 30 days, so for you to expect that is assinine.

    Thanks,
    Matt Heaton / Bluehost.com

    My reply back:
Check your facts Matt, a few days ago I was on box 126 which was down for over over 26 hours! Unacceptable! I did take my money elsewhere, to lunarpages!

  • andrew

    Long Story Short: Bluehost sucks.
As you can tell from the chat transcript I was trying to be as nice as possible for 2 reasons. I wanted a full refund, and the guy is just a peon in the company.

Richie: Welcome to our real-time support area, my name is Richie, how can I help you today?
andrew: Hi Richie, I need to cancel my account and get a refund. I should be entitled to a full refund seeing as how I did not recieve the service advertised as 99.9% uptime, my domain is ********.
andrew: Unfortunately it was much much lower than that. I’ve had serious downtime these past 2 and a half months and it just isn’t acceptable.
Richie: i apologize for that. If your account is under 30 days then we do offer a full refund… after 30 days is a prorated refund
andrew: What about the 99.9% uptime guarantee as advertised here:
    andrew: http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&root=15&id=234
andrew: I have been down for probably in the 40-50 hours since joining 2 months ago. You guaranteed only about 8 hours a year.
andrew: That is a serious violation of the contract I entered.
andrew: I am hoping we can resolve and give me my refund fully as good customer service so as not to sour this any more.
Richie: Unfortunately you do not qualify for a full refund, I apologize… I would be happy to cancel your account and give you a prorated refund of $63.44
andrew: Please explain why I do not qualify based on the 99.9% uptime guarantee, it is right there in black and white on your help pages.
andrew: Is it just a blatant lie that will force me to file complaints with the BBB and such.
Richie: We do not offer a SLA (Service level agreement) where you would qualify for a full refund or credit
    Richie: I’m sorry.
andrew: So how can you have a guarantee if it is not guaranteed?
Richie: If you read the Terms of Service it makes that fact abundantly clear.
andrew: Bluehost has been in violation of the 99.9% uptime guarantee every month since I joined.
Richie: again, I apologize, and I can understand why you would want to cancel, however you only qualify for a refund of $63.44
andrew: Richie, can you honestly tell me that you would be happy if a company offered you a guarantee and didn’t follow through, then would not make good on it.
Richie: I understand your frustration, however, $63.44 is the amount you would get if you canceled your account today. I truly am sorry.
andrew: I was charged $95.40 for this. And $63.44 is just unacceptable based on the service I have recieved. You are customer service oriented and your company does wish to make good with their customers yes?
Richie: I am sorry that it is unnacceptable for you, I truly am, however, it is what you would receive at this time, and unfortunately this is something that is non-negotiable
andrew: Richie, could you please explain to me what the 99.9% uptime guarantee means if not that I will get 99.9% or you will refund me.
Richie: we guarantee 99.9% or you can cancel your account and recieve a prorated refund
Richie: or if you cancel within 30 days you can receive a full refund for web hosting
andrew: But that was guaranteed elsewhere in the fact that I never entered into a binding contract with you to begin with.
Richie: If you read out TOS you would know that we do not offer any additional compensation above the prorated refund if the uptime is not met
andrew: So your telling me that you won’t show me the great customer service of giving me a full refund(minus the domain of course), instead, you wish to sour me forever to bluehost, forcing me to tell everyone I know and meet not to use you in real life and the internet, resulting in alot of negative publicity for bluehost over, what $25.
andrew: I strongly urge you to check with your manager before deciding this.
Richie: I have. The prorated refund does stand, I am sorry.
*****At this point he cleared the chat transcript so as I couldn’t post it(they aren’t very smart though, at the end of the session it asks if you want it e-mailed to you*******
Richie: I can take care of it for you now, I only need you to verify the last 4 digits of the CC on the account.
andrew: Very well, that’s the beauty of it I suppose. Not your fault, but Bluehost. I’m sorry you have to work for such a company. I will unfortunately have to initiate a chargeback for the full amount, and post my experience to blogs all over the internet, and tell all my friends and acquaintances to steer clear of bluehost, all over $25. It’s sad really that a company would choose that.
andrew: It’s too bad it will cost bluehost so much more than it will cost me.
Richie: because of the planned chargeback, before we can delete the account you will need to speak with our billing department. They will need to confirm the chargeback before the account is deleted
Richie: our Billing department is here during standard business hours, M-F 9am-5pm (MST)
Richie: you can call 1-888-401-HOST to speak with the billing department
andrew: Is there an e-mail address I should e-mail them at at.
andrew: Or is it live chat.
Richie: You can call, and speak with a billing representative
andrew: No, I don’t believe I will be calling. Not worth the effort to talk to them, this was draining enough. :) Is there an e-mail address?
    Richie: billing@bluehost.com
Richie: I am sorry it has been so draining for you…
andrew: It’s ok Richie, not your fault. I did make sure I saved the chat script as we talked so as to post it elsewhere on the internet. Anyway, I honestly wish you have a good night. Like I said, I know companies have policies and all, not the fault of the employee if he does as he’s told.
Richie: Well, I thank you for your understanding
andrew: Good Night! And hey you got paid for 35 minutes without having to work too hard. ;)
Richie: I wish, I get to take phone calls during this time as well. Busy night. Have a good night! :)
    andrew: hahaha bye.

Sounds like they give terrible service..

I don’t know why you would use them when some free hosts offer even more… (Eg. ulmb.com 500gb)

  • http://findsource.org/ Scott Brison

I explained this to their tech support and they assured me it would not be a problem when my domain was flipped to the new system. When the legacy servers started going down in September, I called again to make sure my migration was complete and they said everything was fine.

I had them for a year. They were ok at first. Then they got bought by Endurance. They relocated everyone’s site from the west coast to Endurance servers on the east coast. What a nightmare! Everything that stopped working, they just turned it off. You paid for AWstats when you bought your package? Well, no more stats, but they offer a paid stat package. On and on. Outgoing spam filter that deletes messages, but gives you no notification. Service is now terrible. I’m with HostGator now. It’s a really decent service. You can have any trouble ticket assigned to Brent, the friggin owner if you want..:) – Joe

if you ar mad as hell call the vp of customer service of endurance gary and tell him whyhis office phone number is 781 852 3302 maybe things will get beter…..

  • http://www.gwapo.org/ Joe

Last night I got sick lousy service. I bought a “baby” package from hostgator. I downloaded my site from powweb last night (thank god), and tonight try to go change my nameservers to my new ISP. Guess what? All of powweb has been down for hours now as far as I can tell. Both their nameservers are unreachable..:)

Similar experience with Powweb. What a bunch of pr*cks!

They’re truly incompetent, servers and services are constantly going down, and they expend the most effort trying to censor the forums and dodging responsibility.

Their favorite (but constant) excuses are “DDOS attack” and “too many mySQL connections”. Last round of widespread system failures and downtime, they blamed a hardware vendor (NetApp?). I’ve also had support tickets that I submitted just magically disappear.

Avoid at all costs! Wouldn’t be worth the hassle and frustration if the hosting was free. Amateur, juvenile, and deceitful.

  • daniel

    could it get worse?

the forum I am a member of is down four the 5th or 6th time this month. more then 2000 members are disapointed once again and the webmaster didnt get any replys from PowWeb.

    solution:

get off this host because they dont make serious business

  • http://www.thehostguru.com/ Ross

PowWeb is one of many companies severly overselling the resources it offers and it clearly can not live up to its promises. It was bought out by Endurance and has gone down hill since then. Endurance has bought a number of web properties and all have gone down hill since then.

When you shop at Wal Mart don’t rant and rave about how poorly made all the products are and that they are (humpfh) made in China. Powweb has given me problems in the past and I got mad asked for amends and then everything worked out between us. Been running great for a while but I expect there might be problems down the road we can handle. You gotta stick with a relationship and make it work. Don’t run off to find a new girlfriend after a fight then tell everybody how bad she was. there was obviously love at one point. Currently, Powweb is at a low point with the migration and I am not happy with the growth. Same with Austin where I live, everybody loves it at first and then you realize, EVERYBODY loves it and it is now overcrowded on I-35. Still though, I ain’t moving cause I’ve been to other cities and they have their own problems.

  • jacob singer

Don’t worry you are not alone. I am as liberal as possible and I will tell you powweb sucks – I cancelled the account as soon as i saw how bad the “custom cpanel ” was. Yet since I signed up they got one of my domain names under the “free” deal. So now I have sat with their “live help” running in the background over 12 hours (over two days) and on phone hold for 4hours for the release of the domain. And now guess what, the domain has expired and is it up too any whore, but they still own it on the whois, suprise, f powweb, time for an SEO contest, keywords: “powweb sucks” any takers?

  • http://forway.org/ Gerard Kennedy

I called technical support after being 6th in the que and 1 hour on hold. Then i get this smug technicain on the phone and told me that all my files were deleted because i took over 7 days to contact them to make the a payment. To top it off he told me that files on the server are not powwebs responsibility that i had to have back ups but the way he told me he made me fell like a total idiot.

  • Ripped Off

OMG, the migration was a disaster. I had my site migrated several times, but some of the scripts would not clear their automated QA because they were URL checking to prevent spoofing. I explained this to their tech support and they assured me it would not be a problem when my domain was flipped to the new system. When the legacy servers started going down in September, I called again to make sure my migration was complete and they said everything was fine. Guess what? Somebody must have forgotten to tag my site as migrated because when October swung by, they deleted EVERYTHING off the new server at the same time they turned off the old servers forever. The old PowWeb used to back up data for 30 days, but were any of these transitional sites backed up? Nope. To make things better, it turned out my customer information was not copied from their legacy systems so they lost all my payment records! I was only partway into an annual cycle and they didn’t even know how much hosting time they still owed me. Their support staff then tried to convince me to sign up again and start over. FYI, the sales guy at my new hosting service was completely appalled to hear this. Everybody here has to make a big deal out of their experiences so the new owners at Endurance don’t get away with this.

Wow! I came across this site while looking for info on these morons. I am a webdesigner/host but mostly do local stuff. One of my clients had a guy do some virtual tours for her and they are hosted on Powweb…down of course.
You guys oughta get together and get a VPS or reseller hosting. I use servers from PowerVPS and the service ROCKS! 24/7 service and the most helpful people I’ve ever found. I think a reseller pkg goes for about 20 dollars a month, split that between 5 people and you have plenty of storage, reliable service(I’ve only seen 2 hours downtime in over a year)and friendly staff. However you go, good luck! I am recommending that my client demand her money back or the files so I can host them on my servers..downtime means lost income.

I am still reeling from the unbelieveably awful “customer service” and technical service we have been receiving lately from Powweb. Over the past few years we have hosted at Powweb, we have had issue after issue with Billing, Support and lack of customer support.

At this time they are surely at their worst, and I am sure many accounts will not survive the migration because it has been so poorly handled from a service point of view. As we pointed out to them, we can understand technical issues at such a transitional point for them but the horrible service ices the cake and tells us that Powweb does not want us as a customer.

As an example, here is our most outstanding issue, that has been going on for about 2 weeks now.

    - BILLING: Issues with inability to remove expired credit cards and add new ones, you have to send a message to Billing directly. Then they take days to respond, if they ever do, by which time the domain expires and of course they could not possibly give less of a crap.

    - SUPPORT: Disconnected department that has no inter-department communication, responses to the same ticket by several clueless people asking inane questions that have no bearing. Then they also say it will take 2 business days… then 2 more etc. At one point, it was pointing to a completely different site and none of our domains were showing in OPS.
FYI, the problem was outstanding from May 28th and as of 15th June our site is now completely down and inaccessible.

    - Live Help: A complete joke, the main recommendation is to contact support@powweb.com… which as we stated is usually a waste of time.

    - Customer Care: The VP of Customer Care sent several emails to say they were working on our issues but for the most part either his hands are tied, his department does not really exist or being a VP does not stand for much around Powweb as he apparently cannot get anyone to get off their ass and do some work. Not only that, but they do not seem at all interested in finding ways to improve as by this time a customer service specialist should have been assigned to our account. What we got finally is a technician who simply sent us a technical email telling us what we can go and do with no real offer to assist.

    - Forums: A litany of unanswered complaints. Only one person, an Endurance dude named Keith even responded. We posted our experience in a factual manner on a thread discussing poor customer service from Powweb and surprise, it was deleted. Our argument that they should address each negative comment and show how they solved the problem was ignored, probably because problems rarely do get acknowledged much less solved.

Our experience at Powweb has never been what you could call “good”. While their hosting is cheap, the saying “you get what you pay for” does not even apply here because between site downtimes and the outright shitty customer service they do not even deserve the $7.77.

While we don’t like to put down anyone’s business, Powweb’s complete lack of concern for the customer in an industry that their clients depend on in many instances for their livelihood is completely unacceptable. Therefore, we could never recommend Powweb to anyone, anywhere, anyhow.

Powweb has repeatedly deleted my posts that tell the true story of their poor service. The constant server, ftp, email, database problems and downtime. The people that work for PowWeb are simply juvenile, and give me and others more energy to continue reporting them to the BBB and all internet hosting review sites.

I will continue to do so its not a malicious thing, no one slanders powweb, they truly have terrible service and take it out on anyone who complains. They drop the ball more than occasionally and dont what confront the fact that we as customers pay for this service and deserve the right to complain when we are done wrong.

They recently banned me from posting on their community forum. Although they sure took my yearly payment for a site I havent been able to go live with becuase of the unreliable service. We’ll I’ll just escalate my complaints… internet technical forums, local news agencies, and national news agencies, in any medium I can. this is not just rude or bad buisness practices, this borders criminal.

Oh and what’s really juvenile to give bad reputation points to users that complain about bad service on the community forums. Now how lame is that.

    Thanks for posting your outrage.

I am too a victim of their current migration. As a result, my blog is completely torn apart. I lost a months of postings, have “?’s” all over my blog posts, and best of all…its still not resolved going on 7 days.

I just got off the phone, they said it will take another two business days.

If that wasn’t enough, another site that i host with them is also in the same boat, which may i add, i lost several days of advertising on before i noticed the issue. I am with out doubt disgusted with their technical service and their company.

What once was a good hosting company is now been soured by the conglomerate “Endurace.” I hope i can regain my web properties so i can move them to a new host.

there aren’t 11,000 sites on one server, the servers are clustered for load balancing.

Spread the word about Powweb’s unprofessional business practices far and wide Mike, but as for SA being shut down for political reasons…I have my doubts. The comment was odd, but I’m not sure I can say for certain that politics had anything to do with the problems I had.

Personally, I think the biggest reason I had problems was that Powweb wasn’t used to having somebody on their servers who actually expected to be able to use a good portion of the resources they were offering.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

You’re right, Joe Mamma, I do have enough money to keep this site running. The problem is that Powweb’s problems but a crimp in my blogging budget. I was simply asking for some help from my readers, many of whom were happy to oblige.

And you’re right, if I were a teacher I’d be making more money than I make now. Plus, seeing as how its summer, I would have all day every day to work on getting this site back up and running.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

    Thanks for that Mike.

You’re right, Powweb is pretty much the most unprofessional and unreliable hosting company I’ve ever come across.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

New host is Site5.com. Their prices were very good, but I most went for them because they seem to have a good plan in place for traffic spikes (which i get a lot of) and their customer service seemed extremely responsive.

In fact, I’ve already tested their customer service and found that it was great.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

The design is pretty nice, but I’m not so keen on the colors.

Mark and I already had a template going when everything went down, so I think we’re going to complete that one and use it.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Believe it, Hosting admin. They’re awful.

  • Andrew Liu

I have been with powweb for almost 8 years. It is not that they were the best, it is mostly i hate to have to transfer my website and to deal with the down time and other hassles. However, recently, the situation seems getting worst.I have had my email account down for TWO days, i have lost customers because all of my incoming emails were bounced, of course i wouldn’t be able to send emails as well. I called and called, the answer was always the same: our engineering department is aware of the issue, and is working on it. Well, that work took two full days. For another thing their tech support center is in India, and the qualify of phone connection is really bad, I could hardly hear the technician words.
