Pot Meet Kettle

Tom Matzzie, a director for MoveOn.org, commenting on the right-leaning, non-profit advocacy group Move America Forward:

"When you have people participating in partisan activities with nonprofit dollars, that's really something the IRS needs to look at," says Tom Matzzie, the Washington director of the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org, another frequent target for Move America Forward's rhetoric. "An organization with a shady tax status participating in partisan activities and saying things that aren't true is a rogue element in American politics."

The irony is killing me.

Read the whole article. Basically, it is one long complaint about Move America Forward and their tax-exempt, non-profit status. As most of you probably know, non-profits cannot engage in partisan advocacy. I'm not familiar enough with Move America Forward to say one way or the other as to whether or not they meet that definition, though, but its an interesting article anyway.

Personally I'd just as soon see any group that engages political advocacy, bi-partisan or not, be required to show a level of transparency as to where their money comes from.

Their website doesn’t say, at least I can’t find it, what their tax status is.

If they are a 501(c)(3), there are restrictions, but if they are a 501(c)(4), they can do what they want politically, they are exempt from federal income taxes, and donations are not tax-deductible.

Comparison of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4), (6) and (7) Status
