Pomeroy Campaign Lies About NDSU Kerfuffle
Yesterday I posted about a press release sent out by the College Republicans indicating that the Earl Pomeroy campaign had contacted the university to try and get officials there to shut down a display put up by students criticizing the nine-term incumbent.
Last night I actually called and spoke with North Dakota College Republican chairman Jeremy Douglas who related to me the entire story in detail. Douglas was clear that university officials said that the Pomeroy campaign had called and requested that the display be taken down.
But today the Associated Press quotes Pomeroy campaign staffer Brendan Timpe (who had to leave Pomeroy’s campaign office after he was caught violating election regulations) as saying that the campaign didn’t request that the display be taken down:
Pomeroy spokesman Brenden Timpe says several Pomeroy supporters complained about the display, so the campaign asked NDSU officials to check into it.
Timpe says no one asked to have the booth removed.
That’s a lie.
If the Pomeroy campaign wasn’t trying to shut down the display, why would they call the university?
According to the College Republicans, university officials were very appropriate and said explicitly that they told the Pomeroy campaign that it was a free speech issue and that they could only request that the display be taken down and not require it.
The Pomeroy campaign just compounded the stupidity of this issue. First they tried to bully some college students into taking down a display that’s critical of their candidate, then they lied about it.
And I maintain that this is more indicative of just how much trouble Pomeroy is in than any poll. In any other election year the Pomeroy campaign would be on cruise control expecting to glide in for an easy victory. This year they’ve yet to lead in a single poll taken in the race and they’re getting their collective panties in a twist over some silly display made by college students.
