Pomeroy Campaign Has Operatives Out Following Rick Berg Around

Earl Pomeroy

Rick Berg is in the middle of a statewide tour where he’s meeting with constituents and taking questions. Something, I’d point out, that Earl Pomeroy isn’t doing. Rick Berg has a map of all of his events on his website so that you can turn out and meet him. Earl Pomeroy doesn’t publish where he’s going and isn’t holding public events where you can show up and ask him questions.

An important contrast before the two candidates I think.

Anyway, I got this in an email from a reader in Bismarck this morning:

I attended Rick Berg’s kick-off press conference for his bus tour in Bismarck yesterday morning at 8:45. It was at Ace Hardware. I noticed a young man with a small video camera on a tripod right next to the big KX camera guy. In Rick’s opening remarks he commented on how different it is to run a statewide campaign and pointed out the videographer from the Pomeroy camp who is taping him at every public event. (I had noticed a little pickup in the parking lot with Obama stickers all over it on my way in). Rick was not confrontational at all, but very gracious, even calling him by name.

Interesting, no?

Obviously, Pomeroy’s campaign is looking for Berg to make some sort of a gaffe they can make political hay out of. And that’s part of politics. Pomeroy certainly has a right to have his people show up to open events and hear/record what Berg has to say.

But it’s not something that’s typical of North Dakota politics. It’s yet another indicator of just how scared Pomeroy is this campaign season. And, I’d point out, that Berg could probably do the same thing…if Pomeroy held public events.

    Actually, that IS typical of North Dakota politics, at least for the congressional offices. I've worked in the video industry since the 1980s. Sometimes it's to get your opponent's words on tape, sometimes it's to get footage for campaign ads.

    I was at that event, too. Afterward, I got to speak with Berg, and asked him if HE had a tracker for Pomeroy. He kind of chuckled, and said, "No." I don't care if that's what they do in congressional races all over the country, or if it's the norm elsewhere, but here in North Dakota…it's just NOT the North Dakota Way. Not cool.

    Interestingly Pomeroy considers meetings like the one in Williston to discuss the housing shortage or in Devils Lake to discuss the lake situation to be public meetings. He maintains he is out meeting the public in these meetings. Still waiting for the open question periods at any of those meetings. It would be great to tape a Pomeroy open town hall meeting. It would be a disaster for him.

    Campaign workers or volunteers showing up at opponents' media events has been SOP for years. The only thing that's new is that everyone now has video cameras.

    Using a tripod is calling a lot of attention to yourself, though.

      How much is it SOP in North Dakota? Just about everyone I've spoken to about it, up to and including the candidate himself, has been surprised by it.

      If it's happened in the past, and I'm sure it probably has, I'm sure it's been a lot more subtle. This is pretty in-your-face, and I don't think it's going to play well with voters.

How on God's green earth can you make such claims and lies as in your first paragraph' Pomeroy isn't doing ( meeting the public) LIAR!!!!! Pomeroy and Dorgan and Conrad have been ALL OVER the news attending events and working on issues that are relevant in the state! What!! just because You have not been interested in those issues or have not found them in your little world of (mis) information they didn't happen???       I don't live in MN. In fact, I live closer to Billings than I do Minnesota. It isn't my concern what a Congressman OR Republican operative does or says in Iowa, let alone Minnesota. It would be more relevant to know what an Eastern MT Congressman or Republican operative was doing than what any MN Congressman/Operative was doing.

      How is discussing and having an opinion about MY Congressman, but not a congressman who has absolutely relevance to me make me the pot calling the kettle black?

    Now after I have calmed down , I tried to check out what ' the 3 stooges ' as they are affectionately know here , have been up to , and it WAS NOT HARD to find some decent articles of our representatives involved in trying to work on good issues! Just in the last week ( Sept1-3) Dorgan was working on an international agrement with Canada about the flood issues , Pomeroy was working on Veteran's program In Dickinson, Conrad was involved in working with HUD on the devastating loss of infrastucture in West ND, and all 3 of them were prominently involved in a joint meeting concerning the Devils Lake flooding ( Hoeven was there too I believe)
    Shall we thus infer that all these concerns , the vets , the massive threat to our infrastructure in our state due to the floods and oil patch boom etc etc, are of NO CONCERN to idiots like port or hennen or whoever simply because it didn't show up on berg's campaign map .

I am a farmer who lives and works and is alive here in the real part of the state where these matters of seroius importance needs addressing! Is that your contribution here , a token stab at me which proves your laziness , as I said the Pomeroy public record of attendence at local conferences is NOT THAT HARD to research!!!! All of the flood conferences were heavily publilized. Specifically Pomeroy , and the others , faced the public , and apparently because it was not one of the single issue events that is your only concern , it proves you don't give a crap about the issues! Yes Pom. should maybe have been at that health care townhall , but don't lie and be ignorant of all the issues he has faced . I repeat, isn't it just as relevant to ask why Berg did not attend the flood events. what is his stand on the farm bill , the crumbling roads in the state, the Devils lake outlet etc etc.. you don't know do you . or you don't give a sh#t.

    and badlands just proved my point about the stupidlity of some bloggers . He said "It isn't my concern what a congressmen does in another state". And he said , what another congressmen does has 'no absolutely relevance' to him. That is an example of stupidity folks! Lets see the next time that a congressmen from Ohio or California etc votes against his gun rights or for immigration laws or expended federal spending in their district , if he thinks that has NO RELEVANCE to him! Congress will vote again on some foreign military involvement , I guess according to his mind that wouldn't concern him. badlands – do you want people in congress who have high moral character and a smart educated view of the world? badlands – if some political mischief is going on in Montana then I as a good citizen ,would not want that transfered to Washington.       Mmmm….anger management issues? I didn't say that I had a problem with it to begin with Mr. Truth, nor have I *condemned* anyone over it. I said(and it was in another thread btw) it was bizarre to be so brazen doing this when it comes to ND politics. No, it is of no relevance what a Congressman or their operative does in THIS regard regardless of their party affiliation in MN or anywhere else. It would be of more relevance were it to be in Eastern MT just because I live on the MT border and as you know when it comes to Fargo/Moorhead, Grand Forks/East Grand Forks, issues in towns that are close to one another on the border tend to jumble all together so I would pay more attention to that naturally, BUT, even then, I don't vote in Montana. I don't vote in MN. So, no, it is up to the voters in THOSE states to take care of problem congressmen/women by voting their conscience and holding them accountable….oh, just like it is my concern in holding *my* congressman accountable for votes and things he says or does. If I truly believe that a Congressman/woman from MN is horrible for the country then I might donate money to their challengers campaign, but hyperventilate over what is happening with a video camera(which is what the post is about) during a campaign that is perfectly within their rights and legal? Uhh…no, I will leave that to the people that are actually eligible to vote for that person. It also swings the other way. I vote in ND. I don't want somebody from MN meddling in our elections.

      The Speaker of the House *is* my business because of her position. Were she to lose her gavel then she goes back to being San Francisco's problem or joy.

      Now, on to the other part of that post. Since you seem to have such open and unfettered access to Earl than the average citizen has, perhaps you could ask him my question that I have been trying to get an answer to going on months now. It is a question that Senator Conrad answered right away:

      Earl, Were you aware that your comments made in public and in private letters to constituents, including myself, extolling the fact that children(no qualifiers) up to age 26 can stay on their parents insurance was a falsehood? If so, why did you not correct that misconception publicly and state the steps you would take to try and remedy it? If you did not know, then can you explain why you didn't know? You are a senior Congressman who should have indeed known it wasn't a true statement, what group was excluded, why that group was excluded and how to fix that problem. Does that mean you didn't read such an important bill? Even worse, does that mean you didn't know that the bill specifically EXCLUDES such a large group of children? I assume the problem will be fixed in the next few months but that doesn't explain the lack of an explanation from Earl over the 6 or so months since the original bill passed. Mr. Harvestor(did you know harvester is spelled incorrectly in your screen name? No biggie, just wondering), if you are not aware of this then I invite you to take the advice you gave Randy G., and, to quote you, "Research it!!!! IT IS NOT THAT HARD"

        Now, I won't worry about your swear words and insults to others but I will address the ones directed at me. I hope I don't miss all of them:

        -I am a stupid blogger, or stupid in general. Actually no, I am not stupid but thanks for the assumption. You are right however that there *are* stupid bloggers……..

        - I am not a he. I am a wife and mother. I take no issue with this because it isn't readily obvious if you have never read any post where I have made that clear.

        -My mind is concerned about alot of things and were a Congressman/woman from another state to vote to restrict gun rights or involve us in a military conflict that was a totally inappropriate thing to do, then of course it would concern me, BUT, if that person is from another state I have no control over putting pressure on them or voting them out of office. His/her district will have people that will agree with his/her position. That is THEIR right since THEY voted them into office. Why would you think I have the right to try and change the vote of a member of Congress who was legally voted in by his/her constituents? If I voted my congressman/woman into office, I don't want somebody from Ohio trying to change his vote, particularly if I AGREE with him. So, in that regard it does indeed have NO relevance on me as far as trying to change his/her mind or vote. My Congressman/woman is another matter entirely. If a Congressman/woman were to do something illegal, then that would be another issue since Congress has specific rules about those that are not to be partisan in their implementation.

        -Of course I want a member of Congress who has high moral character and a "smart educated" view of the world. That is why I research MY member of Congress when they are running for office. One's view of what high moral character is will be different. If the constituents in a congressional district in California see something I totally disagree with as moral, then that is THEIR right as constituents in that district. If people think that Alvin Greene is better educated on world views than Senator Jim DeMint, then they will vote him into office and that will be THEIR right. It doesn't matter what I think.

        Your two issues quoted are highly subjective and each of us will have different views. In the end, that is why the constituents in each state get to choose their representatives. It would be unacceptable for me to have an entire Congress of Nancy Pelosi clones, and it would be just as unacceptable to others to have an entire Congress of(insert whatever name you see as the polar opposite of Nancy Pelosi)clones, but we don't get to pick out individual members of Congress outside of our district that reflect only our morals.

          I am not a Republican hack. I have nothing to do with either party in anyway. I donate to individual candidates.

          I have voted for all of our "stooges" in the past. My choice of not voting for Earl in the last two cycles have to do with my changing view of him and his actions, and an individual changing of my views overall. Last I checked, I have the Constitutional right to change my mind.

          If you want to insult me I will give you some info so you can refine those insults:

          We are a middle class family, not rich "fat cats"

          My husband is a disabled veteran who spent almost 21 years in the military

          I have a chronic medical condition that would be debilitating if I could not take my prescription medications.

          I am the mother of a child who died

          So perhaps you would like to call me the wife of a "baby killer" as a new insult? Cripple would be good for the medical condition. How did the Discover Channel would be bomber put it? I am also the womb host of several parasitic children who need to be wiped off the face of the planet and didn't I do him a favor by having one of those parasites die. That is one less carbon polluter running around Mother Earth.

          I am sure you can come up with alot more if your previous post insults to me, and others is any indication.

          Now, you feel free to answer me or not Mr. Harvestor. I will tell you that I don't have discussions with people who cannot act like adults and seem to have anger issues, so I will NOT be back to answer or even read any replies you might make but if you want to exercise your fingers by answering, you knock yourself out.
