Poll: Vast Majority Of Americans Don’t Feel Their Civil Rights Are In Jeopardy

So much for Democrats attempts to campaign on the evil Bush administrations’ “wire tapping” and “domestic surveillance” record.

(CNN)—Most Americans do not believe the Bush administration has gone too far in restricting civil liberties as part of the war on terror, a new CNN poll released Thursday suggests.

While 39 percent of the 1,013 poll respondents said the Bush administration has gone too far, 34 percent said they believe the administration has been about right on the restrictions, according to the Opinion Research Corp. survey. Another 25 percent said the administration has not gone far enough.

Polls are polls and I don’t trust them much, but when the disparity is this large it’s pretty telling.

And, just for the record, that’s 59% of poll respondents in Bush’s corner on this issue.

I think it’s fair to say that most Americans are putting national security ahead of civil liberties absolutism.

Since these are, of course, the only two choices.

And therfore that makes what the Bush administration is doing to the Constitution okay?

Sorry.  Those Americans have (pardon me while I put on my tin foil hat) fallen into the web of decit and lies perpatrated by the Bush administration as well as all of Congress (Dems and Reps).

This poll tells me that Government (again, Dems and Reps) has successfully taken American’s brains from them and replaced a “government approved” thinker.

The only thing this poll shows is exactly how a state our country really is in and how horribly bad they have been duped.

Perhaps if those on the Left had something a bit more substantial to offer besides shrill accusations… proof that a real person’s real civil rights have been violated by Bush administration national security policies might be helpful… or a demonstration that someone who actually enjoyed the right of habeas corpus four years ago no longer has that right today.

Without some actual proof, this amounts to just one more tedious little leftist accusation, and it should be obvious by now that the American people are getting pretty inured to those.

No claim of that was made.  It seems to be the preference, that’s all.  Can’t you tell the difference?

Once again, we hear from a “smart” leftie that the American people don’t know what is going on, and should leave it to the leftie elite to tell us what to do.  Typical leftie arrogance and disrespect for “the proletariat”.

What the poll tells me is that (slightly) over a third of the American population feel that their rights are in jeopardy.  While not a majority it is hardly insignificant.

I wish there would have been a fourth option for the people polled to choose from:

d) I do not actually know anything about any of the policies that you are talking about.  I feel that my rights are just fine, or that they are being encroached upon, although I don’t actually know why or how.

How much do you want to bet that each and everyone of that third voted for John Fing Kerry?

Whistler,

No Bet.

Folks, this is hooey.

Far from being a grab of executive power or an undermining of the Constitution, what we have here is an attempt to conduct a war in accordance with the customary laws of warfare and thus keep the whole mess out of our court and legal systems.  That is a brilliant compromise that works both to the disadvantage of the terrorists and to the advantage of our civil liberties.

The only violations of civil rights that I know of are going on in Fargo under the guise of door to door, unannounced “sump pump inspections.” (:^(

What’s that Kevin.  I hadn’t heard about anything like that.

It was started two years ago by the previous mayor and city council.

So what they’re concerned that you’re pumping your groundwater into the storm sewers?

They can come do an inspection without being welcome?

What’s the penalty?

None yet. But since most residents are renters, they know they can get away with it.
I asked the State’s attorney about it and they replied they aren’t interested in enforcing civil rights and I should hire an attorney if I had a problem with it.

When a reasoned discussion of the purported abrogation of Americans’ civil rights by Bush Administration national security policies descends into a question about sump pump inspections, I get the sense that the partisan bilge being spewed out by the Left just isn’t being taken all that seriously.

Perhaps a more pertinent civil rights issue would be how all our votes are diminished in value by every ballot cast by a dead urban Democrat.  If it takes a picture ID to buy a six-pack, cash a welfare check, or apply for Social Security, food stamps, or Section 8 housing assistance it certainly isn’t unreasonable to require the same ID for voting.

Bat One on October 27, 2006 at 04:54 am

Bat: Right on!  When I registered this year, I demanded to show my picture ID. Let’s all start a trend!

Robert108,

As you know, Georgia’s nascent Voter ID statute was shot down by a judge (which is why Republicans MUST control the Senate!).  Yet poll workers at my voting precinct require picture IDs for both primaries and general elections, local or national.  My neighbor, who has volunteered for this work for years, says he has yet to receive a complaint.  He just smiles smugly each time I pass by to vote.

Ok first off, this poll size is ridiculously small.  How is it even fair to suggest that the “Vast Majority Of Americans” or 1,013 in CNN’s terms are satisfied.  If CNN hosted the poll, I would assume (please correct me if I’m wrong) the VAST MAJORITY of the polling audience would be under a similar bias as CNN itself.

Starting with the glorious Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001.

Uniting and Strengthening?!  Right…

“..more than 1,000 Muslim men who have been secretly jailed, many of them secretly deported without having been linked to terrorism.” Innocent until proven guilty?  or Guilty, period.  Every American should have EQUAL rights.  Therefore when someone else gets taken advantage of, you’re taking advantage of the system, the system EVERYONE is protected by.  How is this not an infringement of civil liberties.

Nick on October 29, 2006 at 08:01 am

Nick: I think even US citizens, if they work to support terrorism in any way, have lost their citizenship rights.  “The Constitution is not a suicide pact.” You seem to fear that these tactics might be used against regular Americans who aren’t involved in terrorism; do you have any proof at all of that, or is it just another version of the “bogeyman in the closet”, childhood fear?

That’s a pretty standard sample size for media polls.  That’s the same sample size, in fact, that’s being used in all sorts of polls to indicate that Dems are ahead in the election.

I don’t like polls either, Nick, but when the results are this one-sided the conclusion to draw is obvious.

I think you’re just grasping at straws.

Even the State of “Diebold Stole the Election From John Ketchup” Ohio is requiring photo IDs to vote this year, and the Republic still seems to be surviving!
