Poll: Ports Deal Puts Democrats On Top On National Security
I told you it was their wedge issue…
Democrats in Congress are outpolling President Bush on national security. By a margin of 43 to 41 percent, Americans say they trust Congressional Democrats more than Bush when it comes to protecting our national security. And by a margin of 64-17 percent, they oppose the sale of the ports to Dubai.
The deal is dead. It won’t survive after a 45-day extension or a 450-day extension. Congressional Republicans have no choice but to be extremely aggressive and nasty toward the president and the White House, because they will be properly terrified of looking like Bush’s lapdogs on a hugely unpopular matter that goes to the heart of the Republican party’s political advantage in the United States.
What an unfortunate situation, though I disagree that this deal won’t survive. It can survive and it should survive. Being a leader isn’t about making only those decisions that are popular but making the right decisions even when everyone around you thinks you’re wrong.
This ports deal is the right decision. Dubai Global Ports has managed sea ports around the globe for years without incident and they have been our staunch allies in the middle east and in the war on terror since 9/11. Denying them this contract now would be a slap in the face of a trusted and loyal friend. A friend in a region where friends are hard to come by these days.
The media has really jumped on this story. They and the Democrats have spread a feeling fear over this deal and the public has ate it up. Now Republicans are left having to come out against the deal to save face on national security, as the poll above shows. Which is sad, because if this deal doesn’t go through and the UAE decides that maybe it doesn’t want to be so cooperative with a government that obviously doesn’t trust them it will impact our national security in that the loss of that country’s cooperation in the middle east will set back our military efforts in the middle east and the war on terror in general.
That’s a high price to pay just for the sake of fear mongering and partisan politics.
