Poll: Majority Of Americans “Don’t” Trust Petraeus’ Iraq Report

Call me crazy, but shouldn’t that say “won’t”? Given that the report isn’t even out yet?

There’s been all sorts of speculation about what Petraeus’ report to Congress about Iraq coming this September will say. And while that speculation may have varying degrees of accuracy, some of it may even be spot-on, none of it is based on a full reading of the entire report. Nobody has yet heard what then General will say to Congress in his testimony.
So why on earth would we trust a public opinion poll of a bunch of people who a) don’t even know what will be in this report and b) are apparently so close-minded that they don’t care what it says anyway?
As I’ve asked before, can we just wait until this thing comes out before we all decide what it says? Or, at the very least, could the media hold off on telling us what to think about it until after we can all pretend like we’ve read it?

Likwidshoe: And we should trust this poll because?

I am probably dead wrong as I usually am, but I find it really hard to believe a large number of Americans, let alone a majority would say they wouldn’t believe the reporty no matter what it said, I would love to see the poll questions.

But, as I said I am probably wrong and if so, I give up!

Lik: I wasn’t implying you did believe the poll – that was a rhetorical question!

A majority of Americans don’t trust the upcoming report by the Army’s top commander in Iraq on the progress of the war and even if they did, it wouldn’t change their mind, according to a new poll.

I’m glad America has decided that the truth and facts don’t matter.

Can the Democrats stop touting these polls now?

I think the problem has been hammering the report because of what they think it is going to say. If the report comes out good it makes surrendering to the terrorist harder.

what then General will say to Congress

I thought I read here that the report is being authored by the Whitehouse with some text added by Petraeus. In any event I don’t see how that makes it less credible. Cheney said we are in the last throes and as far as I have been reading even in the MSM it is… even insurgents are joining US troops in fighting Al Qaeda. I think no matter who the author is, it will give a pretty accurate and positive assessment of the situation. No one ever said it was going to be over tomorrow but so many people waiting for the report act like we need to leave by this weekend (see! it’s working! let’s leave / see! no matter what we do, it doesn’t work! let’s leave).

That’s the report. I differentiating between the report and Petraeus’ testimony. The report is being authored by White House officials with input from across the government. Petraeus’ testimony will, I’m sure, be his own thoughts on the subject.
