Poll: Hoffman Takes The Lead In New York House Race

Yesterday I posted about the high profile Republican endorsements Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman has been getting in the New York District 23 House race and how important it is for high-profile Republicans to be able to go beyond their party to endorse candidates based on principle.
Critics of that move, on both the right and left, have suggested that it won’t be good for the GOP. Their contention is that Republicans need candidates closer to the center/left to win. One poll in that House race, however, shows that they may be wrong as it has Hoffman leading over both the Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava and Democrat candidate Bill Owens.

The poll of 300 likely voters, conducted October 24-25, 2009, shows Conservative Doug Hoffman at 31.3%, Democrat Bill Owens at 27.0%, Republican Dede Scozzafava at 19.7%, and 22% undecided. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 5.66%. No information was provided about any of the candidates prior to the ballot question.
This is the third poll done for the Club for Growth in the NY-23 special election, and Doug Hoffman is the only candidate to show an increase in his support levels in each successive poll. The momentum in the race is clearly with Hoffman.

The election happens next week, and with that many voters undecided it’s anyone’s race really. But Hoffman making this strong of a showing means that even if he doesn’t win it’s still a victory. Hoffman has pretty much guaranteed that Scozzafava won’t win, and the message that will send Republicans is that they need to nominate conservatives or else they may as well count on a liberal win.
What’s happening in New York 23 needs to happen all over the country. And not just for open seats. Liberal Republican incumbents need to be challenged in the primaries, and if they can’t be defeated there then challenged by third party/independent candidates.

the Republican leadership needs to urge people to support Hoffman rather than waste their vote.

I LOLd. this kind of stuff is fun to read!!!!!! if the gop doesnt wake up, i pray they will find THEY are the third party.

It’s a poor workman who blames his own tools.

And as I said: More importantly, not only is Hoffman in the lead, the NRCC’s pick is in last position.

    You’re second!

The gop has owned that district for what, 100 years?

What will the spin be if the con loses to the gop?

Not sure, but it seems like you already have your spin down pat.

    The gop will probably win.

If the Dem takes it because the con split the right wing vote, let the topsy turvy world of the gop candidate scramble begin!

Wow, this is all gonna be revealed next week.

    Good times.

Hopefully the Dems and RINO’s are on the decline. Obama and the Liberals may turn out to be a boon for conservatives. We must not go all wobbley – a principled conservative stand will beat the Libs every time (maybe not at Berkley, SF or NYC). Time to grow a pair and show the RINO’s how to win elections and take the country back from the Socialists.

oh, i understand 100%. id be happy for the gop… libby light…. to go away and be replaced with a conservative party. better yet, as i said, they would wake up and see they have gone astray. then quickly kick out the snows and mccains and move too the conservative future. i just dont see that happening. as i have said here many times, i would love to cheer for the gop again. i wont do it until they change…. and if people like me wont plug our nose and pull the lever anymore the gop will lose again-and-again by 2%.

  • sayanything-2227

5.66% error means the poll is essentially garbage, but it definitely shows he has some support out there. Lets hope he wins!

I said this on the other post on the Readers blogs about his. With Dede coming up #3, the Republican leadership needs to urge people to support Hoffman rather than waste their vote. Otherwise they’re voting for another soldier for Nancy Pants.

Rob, I think you underestimate the arrogance and self-importance of the GOP leadership. Sure, there are some individuals who might side with the base but the leadership will, I think, remain unswayed. Win or lose, they will take it as a sign that they are right and the base is to be patrionized and denied.

What will the spin be if the con loses to the gop?

    Anyone?

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

The biggest issue is if he outdraws Dede. That would mean the party
    insiders absolutely effed it up.

    Uh, no I’m not second.

The main page time stamps are screwed up. This post has been up for hours. Yours went up just a bit ago.

Jimmy… I don’t think you understand. True Republican’s WANT the Republican to lose in this race to send a message that they need to get back to conservative principles that represent the Republican Party. They have not done that recently which cost them tons of house and senate seats. John McCain was the worst person the GOP could have nomintated, further weakening the party. Maybe losing an election to an indepentent conservative will wake them up!
