Poll: Earl Pomeroy Loses To Unnamed Candidate 50 – 42

If you needed more confirmation that entrenched, nine-term incumbent Earl Pomeroy is in a lot of trouble in the upcoming election year (after ignoring his constituents and casting a vote for an unpopular health care bill this last year, among other things) I have the line on some private polling that shows Pomeroy floundering even against an unnamed opponent.
I can’t name the source of this poll, so I know you’ll all take it with a grain of salt, but right now Rep. Pomeroy is losing 50 – 42 to “other” in the polling I saw.
No wonder his staffer, when asked, wasn’t sure whether or not Rep. Pomeroy will be running again in 2010. Speculation is rampant that he won’t.
Now North Dakota liberals, not exactly used to being in this position when it comes to someone like Rep. Pomeroy (not to mention Byron Dorgan), will no doubt respond to this news with claims that it is all made up and that Rep. Pomeroy is doing just fine.
But that’ll be so much whistling-past-the-graveyard as I’m willing to bet good money that their own non-public polling is showing similar results.
Stay tuned, folks, The new year is shaping up to be a momentous one for North Dakota politics.

Can I quote Pres. Bush? Bring it on!

  • sayanything-106

No way will Earl get elected to Gov… Just my HMO.

  • Oregon Mike

So why does a great state like ND have somany bufoon libs in DC?

  • sayanything-106

Rob I think a lot of dems are oblivious to what is coming their way. The left is going to get its @$$ kick in the next election and they still soldier on with their liberal agenda.

  • sayanything-4124

My great dane’s name is Jake. Insert him vs other, and I bet he would win ;)

As for the money….I am not so sure that will make or break the race. Look at all the money that has poured into the state over healthcare, and the polls haven’t budged. A week or so ago, I was watching the news, and every commercial break had at least one pro-reform commercial. Inundated with the commercials, and it still hasn’t mattered. So, while you can’t discount anything from challenger candidate to the money that will pour in, I also don’t think the amount of money that will come to his coffers should indicate an automatic win.

  • sayanything-106

If the republicans are serious this time we need to put up a GOOD candidate, not some also ran… We don’t need another country club liberal republican. ND needs to have a true constitutional constructionalist Republican. I am sick and tired of the GOP RINO stinking up the place and trying to be democratic light. The RINOS are the ones that got us in this mess. Trading one liberal for another isn’t and shouldn’t be an option.

  • lioncourt

I wouldn’t put too much stock in this. “Other” is one hell of a guy, but he never runs.

  • Brent

Hennen just reported this as Pomeroy winning against “Other” 50-42. I assume he is wrong and your post is right, Rob — i.e., Pomeroy is losing against “Other”, right?

  • sayanything-4124

Wonder if Stenehjam will run? That would be quite interesting.

I don’t see Pomeroy winning, because, and of course I can only speak for HERE, people are beyond ticked off at him, and it isn’t a flash in a pan, forget it tomorrow kind of angry, it is a betrayal kind of anger.

    Nancy Boy.

  • sayanything-106

I think the GOP should throw some of their money this way to defeat to out of touch leftists and send them home.

  • sayanything-106

Earl is a Pelosi Puppy Lap dog that heals everytime that Nancy tell him too.

  • sayanything-106

I don’t see Earl winning either because he is a lap dog for the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, hence the name Pelosi Puppy.

  • Billy

I assume the NRCC is polling and shopping the results to potentially strong candidates to recruit them into the race. But the fact the Rasmussen and Zogby polls on Dorgan v. Hoeven were independent and public really elevated that race among national political watchers. Wish we’d get the same on Pomeroy.

  • sayanything-279

    Ya gotta love it

  • sayanything-4064

I’ve heard from a few “insiders” on the left that Pomeroy will not run for the House, but instead will run for the next ND Governor term.

  • sayanything-4124

He is 210lbs(last time he was at the vet and weighed) Harlequin G.D., so no pushing him around(because like all Danes, if he doesn’t want to move, he just sits down and no amount of force can move him..lol) when it comes to working for the constituents vs Washington BUT, he hates the Schwan’s truck with a passion. Do you think hay could be made of that? ;)

  • GrampsWithCramps

Unfortunately, the Republicans will most likely nominate some no-name candidate like they have year after year and Pomeroy will win in a real match-up just because of name recognition.

  • sayanything-279

In the recent NJ governor race the man who spent the most money did not win.

  • sayanything-6955

Point well taken, boatloads of cash will be headed this way for sure.

  • sayanything-7134

The fact that you even mention it pretty much screws with you integrity. Let us play the game “If the Shoe was on the Other Foot” and it was one the liberal bloggers coming up with a poll Showing the reverse the outrage would come pouring forth from the cons.

  • sayanything-6955

Any incumbent who garners less than 50% is in deep do do. I personally think he will poll worse against a decent opponent, like Badlands dog Jake!

  • sayanything-6955

We need someone who doesn’t get pushed around!

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Hey, I acknowledged in the post that blind partisans like you would discount it. And that’s fine. I admit that I can’t source you to the poll.

That being said, this fits in with everything else we’re seeing by Pomeroy. So take it with a grain of salt, but you’re a fool to discount it.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Yeah, Hennen goofed. He meant Pomeroy losing against an unnamed candidate.

  • sayanything-6955

I have said for months Earl was in trouble against anyone.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I wouldn’t be so sure. This is a golden opportunity. That doesn’t mean Republicans won’t end up wasting it, but from what I’m hearing I’d expect a strong challenger.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I’ve heard that too. I guess anything is possible.

Pomeroy gets to resign a winner and move on to another office, and someone without Pomeroy’s baggage runs for the House.

  • sayanything-7134

You have to love an unnamed source for a poll. So you and a few beer buddies at a Tea Party ? I am surprised he didn’t lose by more.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

As I said in the post, I have no doubt that many will discount this. But I assure you, it’s a very real poll. And I’m sure Rep. Pomeroy’s own polling is showing similar results.

Which is why his staffer doesn’t know, when asked, whether or not he’s running in 2010.

  • sayanything-32073

I sure hope Republicans can come up with some decent viable conservative candidates. Many who would do well don’t want the aggrevation. Wayne Stenjhem would be good but I think he likes it where he is. Bob would also be good but he is not as popular a public figure. I would like to see Hoeven run but I don’t think he is as conservative as many of us would like. I don’t think Earl could win governor either, at least I would hope not. I would like to see more good conservatives step out and at least try to get some statewide attention.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

That’s a fair point. But I don’t think you liberals should be dismissing it.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Uh, no thanks, but I appreciate the sentiment!

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

We just need to remember that we need a good candidate to run against him. I think this poll shows that North Dakotans are ready to vote against Pomeroy.

Now, who do we give them to vote for?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

He’s in trouble, sure, but we’d do well not to underestimate him and the millions he’ll get from big-money, out-of-state liberals.

North Dakota is going to be a battleground in 2010.

  • sayanything-32073

Never underestimate the power of an uninformed electorate. It looks like the long sleeping are slowly waking up now but much damage has already been done.
