Poll: Americans Trust Republicans More Than Democrats On National Security Again
Back in 2006, when American angst over the war in Iraq was at its peak and resurgent Democrats took control of Congress, one of the leading indicators of America’s lost trust in Republicans was the fact that polls showed the public trusting Democrats as much or more than Republicans on national security issues. Historically, there’s always been a gap there with Americans trusting Republicans more.
Now - two years later and things in Iraq turning exactly the opposite from the way Obama, the Democrats and the media told us it would, Republicans have their edge back on national security issues.
One of the most notable polling results at the time of the 2006 elections was that Democrats had closed the national-security gap versus Republicans who held a long and significant advantage in that area. That was short-lived.
Unfortunately for Democrats, the gap has reopened. Democrats are regaining the reputation with voters as wimps.
Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner has just released a survey that indicates that voters perceive Republicans once again as far and away better on national security issues than Democrats.
Forty nine percent of those surveyed thought Republicans were better on national security while 35 percent thought Democrats better. When it came to combating terrorism, 48 percent thought Republicans superior to Democrats while 33 percent gave Democrats the advantage.
This illustrates just how badly the Democrats’ endless defeatism on Iraq has come back to bite them. The Republican part remains plagued by trust issues with the public, I think, but on national security at least those trust issues were fleeting.
Bush and his Republicans, by and large, have had it right on Iraq. And the Democrats, though they’ll never admit it, have been nothing but wrong.
