Poll: 62% Of Americans Want Less Government, Lower Taxes

A blow for liberalism?

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 62% of voters would prefer fewer government services with lower taxes. Nearly a third (29%) disagrees and would rather have a bigger government with higher taxes. Ten percent (10%) are not sure.

I think this illustrates perfectly that America is essentially a nation with limited-government sensibilities.  They don’t want massive new government programs with massive new taxes to pay them, and the fact that such things keep getting foisted upon them is the reason why most Americans are so cynical about politics in general.

Of course, there are also a lot of Americans who want the government services they don’t use cut and those tax savings passed on but will fiercely oppose any effort to cut services they do want,  but even so.  On the whole I think Americans want less government in their lives.

That’s why Americans put Republicans in charge in 1994.  That the Republicans failed to deliver on that is why the Americans took them out of office in 2006 (with the Democrats taking their place by default).  And unless the Republicans shape up, there inability to deliver a limited-government agenda from 2006 forward will be why the lose even more ground and possibly even the White House in 2008.
