Political Correctness Gone Wrong

Some examples of political correctness going to far:

From the Los Angeles Daily News:

Los Angeles County officials have gone PC (politically correct) on PCs (personal computers) -- banning as potentially "offensive or defamatory" the words master and slave from computer hard drives and video equipment where they are used to describe primary and secondary circuits.

From Mens' News Daily:

Last April 2, a gang of young black thugs entertained themselves by cruising the university town of Charlottesville, Virginia, looking for white students to attack with clubs and other instruments of mayhem. After injuring several students and putting two in the hospital, they were apprehended by police. The response of the city and UVA community was an outpouring of sympathy for the "victims"- that is, the thugs who carried out the attacks. Moreover, several bake sales were held to raise funds to assure that these "victims" were properly represented in court!

From the Washington Times:

As Americans prepare for their annual commemoration of the first Thanksgiving feast -- actually held in October 1621 to celebrate a bountiful harvest -- the Pilgrims are persona non grata in Plymouth, Mass.

Two years ago, the city's Board of Selectmen erected plaques at Plymouth Rock declaring: "Native Americans do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims and other European settlers. To them, Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of their people, the theft of their lands, and the relentless assault on their culture."

The anti-Pilgrim agenda is now national policy. Schools that celebrate Thanksgiving with classroom skits about Pilgrims and Indians do so in violation of federal curriculum guidelines.

"At Thanksgiving, shift the focus away from re-enacting the first Thanksgiving," teachers were warned in an instructional guide published by the Department of Education in 1996.

[...] Well I’m willing to admit that I never was a WWII vet so maybe it is offending to them but am not sure about that.  And as for me being not thick skinned enough, yeah I know, I’m the problem. You can’t even imagine that this could be offensive so I’m the problem. Fair enough.  My grandfather was a WWII vet. He took his role in the war very seriously, as do other vets that I’ve spoken too. For them, WWII was a very serious matter. I don’t think they’d appreciate the war which claimed the lives of millions, and changed the world forever being summarized in an immature fashion for people to laugh about.  To you, what you posted may be fine. To others not. In the same sense, jokes to others might be fine, while to some offensive. I still however fail to see how these jokes are racist. Offensive - it’s a matter of personal taste thereby subjective is it not? Racist on the other hand? I don’t think so. Spray painting a swastika on the door of a Jewish family living in Brooklyn, now that’s racist. Calling a black man a nigger just because you don’t like the color of his skin - that’s racist. Calling a white guy a cracker, that’s racist. (By the way, why is it that black comedians can crack jokes about white people, and that’s fine. The minute a white guy comes on stage and starts poking fun at the blacks, it’s instantly racist????) I think you’ve failed to see that these jokes make fun of the French military and government. Not the people themselves.  As for you being the problem, I don’t believe that. But it’s some of the ideals that you espouse which I think are a part of a much larger issue. You (and I’m just making a general observation), are so careful to ensure that nobody gets offended, that eventually every culture, religion, and race become distanced to a point that eventually all speech, writing, and thought become white-washed.  Instead of Christmas, we now have X-mas. Who the hell is X?  We can’t have our kids singing Christmas carols in school now, because the Muslims get offended. Well, who sticks up for the little kids who want to sing Christmas songs?  You’re no longer Black, you’re African-American. Half my black friends don’t like being called this, because they’re not even African.  You’re not Chinese anymore.. you’re an Asian-American You’re not retarded, you’re mentally challenged.  You can burn the flag in protest, but not say “In God We Trust” The list goes on and on and on… Next thing you know, we’re no longer Americans, we are Global Citizens. When that begins to happen, then you know we’re in trouble. What happens to our cultures, or religions, ideals and beliefs?  Ok, I’m done ranting. Sorry MHC… this post was not intended to offend (pun intended ) you. Instead, here’s something for you to read which might give you a different perspective.Last edited by amstel78 on Wed Jul 27, 2005 8:52 PM, edited 1 time in total [...]

I have justfount out from my 11yr old daughter that theyre not allowed to say ‘brown bread’ anymore in school and have to say’not white bread’, obviously i am incensed as this is PC gone mad.  I overlooked the banning of ‘blackboard’ and the fact that they cant say ‘coloured pens’, however i’m not prepared to let this happen and am still waiting to discover a person of a different ethnic origin to myself who is offended by these terms in the first place.  This is causing confusion and making an issue of something which doesn’t exist initially anyway!! Lets speak up
