Please Let’s Not Jump To Conclusions About The Family Research Council Shooting

Like the rest of you I am watching with a mixture of horror and sadness the news of the shooting outside the fiscally conservative Family Research Council headquarters in Washington DC.

As you might expect, given the location of the crime, speculation is already rampant about political motivations. And I’ll admit that I suspect that political motivation is likely, but let’s be clear that we don’t know the motivation yet. And even if the criminal was motivated to his crime by politics, that isn’t necessarily an indictment of everyone else who believes like him.

People who, in a democratic society like ours, resort to settling political scores with bullets are in a group all their own. I’m not going to blame an entire ideological or social movement for the crimes of one person.

Maybe just this once we could just condemn the criminal for the crime, and not turn it into a larger political brawl. But I doubt it.
