Petraeus Emulates Sherman

It was William Tecumseh Sherman who famously stated:

I hereby state, and mean all that I say, that I never have been and never will be a candidate for President; that if nominated by either party, I should peremptorily decline; and even if unanimously elected I should decline to serve.

This is frequently shortened to “If nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve.”

David Petraeus has now stated:

In an exclusive interview on CNN Newsroom Wednesday, Kyra Phillips asked Petraeus whether the door might be open for a 2012 run.

“I’ll close it right here, right now,” Petraeus said. “I will remind you of the great country song that used to ask ‘What about no don’t you understand.’”

LBH needs a new standard bearer.
