Pelosi Doesn’t “See The Votes” In The House For The Senate Health Bill
And presuming that Republicans in the Senate continue to stand behind their new (thanks to Scott Brown) filibuster of the bill, that leaves what I like to call “cheating.” Or passing the health care bill through the Senate avoiding the filibuster by using legislative rules that were never intended to be used for such legislation.
Which would be a monumental abuse of power by Democrats (currently being facilitated by Senator Kent Conrad).
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday she does not think the Senate’s version of healthcare reform has enough support in the House to pass without changes.
“I don’t see the votes for it,” Pelosi told reporters. She added Democratic congressional leaders were “not in a big rush” to determine their next move on healthcare, but remained determined to pass a bill this year.
It’s funny how many liberals are now talking about how they’re not in a “big rush” on health care. Pelosi is saying that now. Yesterday Harry Reid was saying it.
That certainly wasn’t the case when Pelosi was slamming through a pre-Christmas vote on the health care bill before Christmas. That wasn’t the case when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid forced a Christmas Eve vote on health care in the Senate. That wasn’t the case when Obama was saying “no time to delay” on health care.
But now suddenly, there’s no rush.
As I said before, I think the Democrat ploy here is to shelve the health care debate for a while. Let people settle down. Let passions cool. Then try to slip it through again, this time using the reconciliation process to get around the filibuster.
