Pelosi Being A Good Dhimmi In Damascus

She’s covering her head like all infidel members of the inferior sex should.

image

That’s our libs for you.  Always culturally sensitive, even when that culture oppresses women.

Well, at least she wasn’t wearing one of these:

image

Update: As has been pointed out in the comments, Pelosi was visiting a mosque at the time of the photo above and such head ware is customary for women when visiting a mosque.  Sort of like those visiting a synagogue wearing that beanie hat they wear.

Still, though, it’s a bit irksome to see a female US Senator wearing the ornaments an oppressive culture forces its women to wear.

Does this tick you off? Click here to email your elected representatives right here on Say Anything, or comment below.

Rob,

Oh, I don’t know.  From a purely aesthetic point of view the full burka could be considered a distinct improvment when it comes to Pelosi.

If she were wearing the burkha in public, that would be a bit different…

Unfortunately, not the first Democrat Speaker of the House to meddle in foreign affairs.
Speaker Jim Wright -D TX, made frequent trips to Nicaragua in support of the Thugocracy there, in oposition to the President’s policy.

I tried today to think of a Republican Speaker of the House who did anything remotely similar.  Nada!

Former Speaker, Texas Democrat, Jim Wright authored the infamous “Dear Commandante” letter to communist Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega., in a deliberate attempt to undermine US policy in Central America during the Reagan administration.

Many a female politician has worn a scarf or hat on her head when visiting the Vatican. As a sign of respect.

The fact she was there, undermining U.S. foreign policy and giving aid to those who succor terrorists, that’s an outrage. Wearing a scarf, that’s not.

Pomerdorgrad on April 4, 2007 at 10:26 am

MikeAdamson, she has a right to be there as part of her congressional oversight role. She has no right to be there to perform a diplomatic function.  That would be an encroachment upon Article II powers.

The main objection to her presence is that in fact her role seems to be diplomatic rather than oversight in nature, as your link to “a message from Israel” suggests.  From my perspective she has pretty much shot herself in the foot with respect to any further cooperation with the State Department.  Those bureaucrats don’t like being excluded from the loop.

The real joke here is that Ms Pelosi claims to be an ardent feminist, and actively courts that vote.  Her declarations about being the first female Speaker come to mind.  In this context, her wearing of a symbol of subjugation of women is particularly poignant.  BTW, wearing a headscarf in the Vatican is a sign of respect, not subjugation.  Not the same at all.

BZZZZZ!

Wearing a headscarf is not a symbol of subjugation, it’s a symbol of modesty and privacy (muslim women are not required to wear headscarfs at home or anywhere else where there are not males present -other than a close family member). And by that they have the same meaning and purpose (modesty and respect) that the veil has had for women in christianity and particulary for the Roman Catholic Church mainly outside the U.S. and before Vatican-II.

Obviously you’re free to interpret that as symbol a female subjugation thru different religions, but if you choose to do so, the same applies to the mentioend example of wearing a veil in the Vatican.

The whole point of this blog entry was to ridicule Pelosi while in a foreign culture that oppresses women (I’m not saying they don’t), but as noted in previous post others (Condi, Laura, etc.) have done the same in similar situations but despite the UPDATE, Rob still finds Pelosi’s actions (and only hers) “irksome”.

Jairzinho on April 4, 2007 at 11:34 am

It would be a lot easier not to sneer at Speaker Pelosi if she had managed the same level of respect for the duly elected chief of state of her own country as she does for the autocratic Assad who has been implicated in the assassination of the former Prime Minister of Lebanon by the UN investigation.

Jairzinho,

If Congressman Pitts had been shown to be disrespectful of the US President, I would certainly agree with you on the need to encourage him to be more respectful.  Such is not the case, however.

On the other hand,I found this bit, from the article you cited, most intriguing.  Perhaps you didn’t bother to read far enough to see it, or comprehend the full significance.

Gabe Neville, Pitts’ chief of staff, said Monday the conference between Assad and the three Republicans was intended to be “low profile.”

“It was done in cooperation with the administration,” he said.

Granted, the next paragraph offers the obligatory disclaimer,

However, White House spokesman Alex Conant said Monday the Bush administration — as a blanket policy — “discourages all of (Congress’) visits” to Syria, a country believed by the White House to sponsor terrorism.

But even this overlooks the fact that it is the Department of State, not the White House, that by law determines which states are supporters of terrorism, or that the designation of Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism was first made during the Clinton administration.

In any event, it would appear that Pitts’ trip, unlike that of Pelosi, was made with at least the deniable blessing of the administration.  A far more respectful approach, don’t you agree?

Yes, I agree Bat One, a “more respectful” approach indeed. But that brings up the question about why they did get the “blessing” and Pelosi didn’t, and why it had to be “low profile” in their case? I hope it has nothing to do with going completely against their own policy of “having the terrorist-funding Syrian goverment isolated from the rest of the world” and thus appearing hypocritical or with the IOKIYAR rule. BTW, who is making Pelosi’s visit a big deal? This could have been also “low profile” otherwise.

We are getting way off topic. The original reason for the blog entry was Pelosi’s scarf, not the purpose of her visit or the lack of consent by the administration.

Thanks for a mature debate. Unfortunatelly I cannot say the same for some others posts here, the “Pelosi will have the terrorist eat our babies if she gets her way” type.

Jairzinho on April 4, 2007 at 07:27 pm

Jairzinho,

Thank you as well!  Pelosi remains little more than a modestly amusing sideshow, and I doubt that the administration would have used her visit, given her high visibility, for anything serious.

President Bush is still excoriated for his “Axis of Evil” description and his determined unwillingness to deal formally with North Korea bilaterally.  But the Koreans appear to be coming around, most likely with a firm but quiet push by the Chinese (and a quiet cutoff of international banking access), and Iran is equally vulnerable to a broad array of pressures, including recent threats by the Chinese and the Russians.

Hell, its even possible that the Pelosi trip was a deliberate smokescreen to cover that of Pitts and the other Republicans.

Pelosi: Israel and Syria want talks

The White House condemned the meeting
between Pelosi and the Syrian president [AFP]

The speaker of the US House of Representatives has said that Israel and Syria want peace talks.
Nancy Pelosi met Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president on Wednesday and conveyed a message from Ehud Olmert, the Israeli premier, that Israel was ready for peace talks.
She said al-Assad responded that he was ready to restart peace talks too.
“[Our] meeting with the president enabled us to communicate a message from Prime Minister Olmert that Israel was ready to engage in peace talks,” Pelosi said.
She added that al-Assad “was ready to engage in negotiations [for] peace with Israel”.
Pelosi spoke to journalists at the end of a two-day visit to Syria, which the White House criticised as undermining US efforts to isolate Syria.

Syria’s official news agency quoted al-Assad as telling Pelosi: “Syria has adopted the Arab initiative. Its strategic choice is peace.”
‘No response’
George Bush, the US president, has said Pelosi’s trip signals that the al-Assad government is part of the international mainstream when it is not.
“A lot of people have gone to see President Assad ... and yet we haven’t seen action. He hasn’t responded,” Bush said.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for the White House national security council called the visit “counterproductive”.
Pelosi said she and other members of her congressional delegation told al-Assad their concerns about fighters crossing from Syria into Iraq.
The house speaker also said she had spoken to the president about Israeli soldiers captured by the Lebanese group Hezbollah and Palestinian groups.
Democrats have argued that the US should engage with its rivals in the region - Iran and Syria - to make headway in easing the problems in Iraq, Lebanon and the Israeli-Arab peace process.

Christ goon, Pelosi is beyond delusional.  She flies into Syrian and SHAZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAM!!  Peace is just around the bend.  Israel and the U.S. diplomatic channels couldn’t get this BREAKTHROUGH, but Pelosi puts on her PRO-CHOICE head scarf, sits down with DR.ASSAD, and THE EAGLE HAS LANDED.
She has NO ONE to tell her she’s being used by our ENEMIES, I mean, there is no MATURE DEAN (no pun intended) left in the Democratic party.  This is so reminiscent of John Kerry sitting down with the V.C. and N.Vietnamese in Paris,(while the SWIFTBOATERS were still in Nam) while still commissioned a Naval Lt.
It’s also strangely familiar in mindset to Neville Chamberlain’s foray into pre-war Nazi Germany.
Hitler used Chamberlain as a USEFUL IDIOT.
Assad and Ahmedenijiad are doing likewise with LalaPelosi.
The problem as I SEE IT, is Pelosi, and those who support her, as SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO far out of their league.  They think DOGS don’t bite, if THEY TALK NICE TO THEM.  Pelosi thinks being “SPEAKER” makes her tougher, smarter, faster, stronger and prettier, than she was, the day before the election.

Had Speaker Pelosi worn the Hijab inside a Mosque, this would have indicated respect but for Pelosi to wear it on the streets of Damascus all the while she is sitting with the self-imposed Baschar al-Assad who has come to symbolize oppression and one of the reasons why women are forced to wear the Hijab as they turn to religion to express their freedom is a statement of submittal not only to oppression but also to lack of women’s rights in the Middle East. Pelosi just reversed the work of the Syrian civil society and those who aspire for women’s freedom in the Muslim countries many years back with her visual statement. Her lack of experience of the Middle East is showing.

Assad could not have been happier because Syrian women, seeing a US official confirming what their husbands, the Imams in the Mosques tell them, and the society at large imposes on them through peer pressure will see in her wearing a Hijab as a confirmation of the societal pressures they are constantly under. No one will ever know how many women took the Hijab on after seeing Pelosi wearing it. The damage Speaker Pelosi is causing with her visit to Syria will be felt for many years to come.

Bat One, an addendum.  Mrs. Pelosi (praise be unto her), is PRO-CHOICE, by her own record.
What does PRO-CHOICE mean?

The HYPOCRISY and RATIONALIZATION is STAGGERING.

Her new found friends are not pro-woman.  Ergo the “HIJAB” Mrs. Pelosi, PRO-CHOICED (PRO-CHOOOOOOSED)  to wear., Her new found Syrian pals, and buddies, don’t allow WOMEN to FUNCTION in LEGISLATIVE ROLES, never mind LIBERAL LEGISLATORS trying to act in FOREIGN POLICY ROLES.

Cut to the chase.  Pelosi is a CLOWN, a HIJAB wearing LIMOSINE LIB, phony.

I’d simply point out that the Congress has a constitutionally mandated role in foreign affairs.  Furthermore, members of Congress travel to foreign locales all the time.

I’d simply point out that the Congress has a constitutionally mandated role in foreign affairs.

The problem is that what Congress thinks that role is isn’t always what the founders intended.

The purpose of government shouldn’t be to do good, but simply to refrain from doing evil.

Rob, I take great pains not to just RIP TO SHREDS, certain….Half wits.  By half wit, I mean sincerely, those who are.. “half intelligent”.
If you are half intelligent, it’s like flipping a coin.
Grotius, whether wit or half, makes a HALF hearted attempt to weigh in. He made the assertion that ““CONGRESS has a CONSTITUTIONALLY MANDATED ROLE IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS.”“
Whereso???  What role does the CONSTITUTION MANDATE on BEHALF of PELOSI et al Congress???????????????
as to FOREIGN AFFAIRS?????? NONE/ZERO/NUNN
THEN GROTIUS asserts that CONGRESSMEN TRAVEL TO FOREIGN SITES “ALL THE TIME”. So what.
I travel to WASHINGTON D.C. “all the time”.
Idiots scare me.  The lack of logic implored by otherwise “bright peeps” scares me.
Unless I am a “HALF WIT”, Congress has NO ROLE in foreign policy.  GROTIUS believes otherwise….BASED ON .....what????

Mickey,

First, thank you for the kind words.  Without getting into a broad-based theological discussion, it occurs to me that while my sons know me as “Dad,” my stepsons know me by my nickname, my wife knows me by “sweetheart,” I am, still, the same person, regardless of the appellation, with the same love for all of them.

As for Ms. Pelosi’s feminism, I suspect that if she was challenged, she would say that her presence is an opening, the beginning of a dialogue and a process to bring a more liberal approach to those oppressed.  And she would be correct in this, although she would also be blissfully ignorant of the fact that her proto-feminist approach is exactly the same as that of President Bush.  Except that his concern and his policy involves the choice of liberty and freedom of choice for all… not just the feminist few.

That Pelosi justifies her trip with the same rationale as the President she opposes, only on a far smaller scale, reflects her far smaller mind and her far smaller ambition as well.  That she is oblivious to the irony is a reflection of that smaller mind and ambition.

Nancy Pelosi is in direct violation of The Logan Act, which is still in it’s original language and completely enforceable. The act reads:

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

She should be arrested upon her arrival back in the United States

I think that this perspective may help clarify that Pelosi has, in fact, harmed the Syrian Reform parties attempts to change their oppressive government.
