PC at the University of North Dakota

This action by UND just enables the haters.

The Gamma Phi Beta sorority house was put on probation by both the sorority’s central office in Centennial, Colo., and by the UND Dean of Student’s Office, which will investigate a discrimination complaint filed against the sorority by American Indian students….
Photos from the November party were posted on the Facebook account of Gamma Phi president Anastasia Ginda. They show Gamma Phi members in “Indian maiden”-style dresses and feather headdresses. Some male guests are dressed in makeshift loincloths and smeared with red paint, and several photos show one male guest in a mock Indian pose.
Gamma Phi’s past president Jillian Krivarchka said the party was billed as a “cowboys-themed party, rather than an Indians-themed party, and that the sorority could not control how people chose to dress….
UND Greek Life Coordinator Cassie Gerhardt said Monday she had heard rumors about the Indian costumes, but had not gotten confirmation or seen photos until the party was reported in the media. When her office approved the party, Gerhadt said, it was only labeled as a “fun fall date party.

I’ll have to weigh in with a big “so what.”
Nobody was offended until months later when some pictures of the event turned up on the internet. That is nobody had any complaints at the time.
Nobody thought the behavior was demeaning to Indians at the time.
All we have is a bunch of noise about a couple kids dressing up as Indians. What is the complaint. What is wrong for dressing up as an Indian?
Apparently the best they can come up with is that the party took place in the same month that the announcement for the UND/NCAA settlement was announced. HUH? What does that have to do with anything.
All this amounts to is a few loud people pretending to be offended. They need to be ignored.

That this story merits a front page, above the fold, location, and an editorial from Dennis, shows just how small town and provincial GF is.

Have we gone over the edge? Everyone has a right to be offended, and as a consequence, they have the right to publicity and a remedy. Next thing we know, there will be a party and people will be imitating Germans or Swedes (Swedish people)–you know, they will have the top button on their shirt buttoned. Gasp!!!

Unlike those that did their undergrad work at the agricultural school (NDSU) you can actually read your graduate diploma.

    What about the First Amendment?

I have a number of pictures of me from college wherein I’m dressed as a Roman. In fact, I’ve heard this is pretty common. I expect to get an outraged call from a representative Italian-American community.

Favored minorities also fit in with that.

I graduated from UND and am embarrassed by my degree. Thank god I chose to spend my graduate school $ at NDSU.

What’s “an indian pose”? Are we supposed to be PC about body language now?

Link to the photos, done by someone who probably is against the logo, but oh well, you get to see the pictures for yourself.

    What about the First Amendment?

Only Barack Obama’s spiritual leader has the right to be racist.

Not that these kids were being racist.
