This action by UND just enables the haters.
The Gamma Phi Beta sorority house was put on probation by both the sorority’s central office in Centennial, Colo., and by the UND Dean of Student’s Office, which will investigate a discrimination complaint filed against the sorority by American Indian students....
Photos from the November party were posted on the Facebook account of Gamma Phi president Anastasia Ginda. They show Gamma Phi members in “Indian maiden”-style dresses and feather headdresses. Some male guests are dressed in makeshift loincloths and smeared with red paint, and several photos show one male guest in a mock Indian pose.
Gamma Phi’s past president Jillian Krivarchka said the party was billed as a “cowboys-themed party, rather than an Indians-themed party, and that the sorority could not control how people chose to dress....
UND Greek Life Coordinator Cassie Gerhardt said Monday she had heard rumors about the Indian costumes, but had not gotten confirmation or seen photos until the party was reported in the media. When her office approved the party, Gerhadt said, it was only labeled as a “fun fall date party.
I’ll have to weigh in with a big “so what.”
Nobody was offended until months later when some pictures of the event turned up on the internet. That is nobody had any complaints at the time.
Nobody thought the behavior was demeaning to Indians at the time.
All we have is a bunch of noise about a couple kids dressing up as Indians. What is the complaint. What is wrong for dressing up as an Indian?
Apparently the best they can come up with is that the party took place in the same month that the announcement for the UND/NCAA settlement was announced. HUH? What does that have to do with anything.
All this amounts to is a few loud people pretending to be offended. They need to be ignored.
