Paul Ryan Says “Let The States Decide” On Medicinal Marijuana

According to Paul Ryan, he doesn’t believe in medicinal marijuana himself, but he thinks the states ought to decide for himself. He also said that the marijuana issue is “not a high priority” for the Romney campaign.

That’s a pretty amazing statement from a high-profile Republican politician. Kudos for Ryan to have the courage to oppose the federalization (at least in this instance) of drug policy. So much of our federal government’s accumulation and abuse of power has come under the justification of the “war on drugs,” itself a policy that has existed for 50 years while drug use and availability has grown.

California has long fought a war with the federal government over medical marijuana, with the state legalizing it but the federal government refusing to recognize it. Here in North Dakota our state leaders legalized hemp farming only to see attempts to actually grow hemp derailed by federal interventions.

What Paul Ryan is proposing would be a healthy shift in national policy. Kudos to him.
